During primary appraisal a person will assess the situation in context of their well-being. The person may look at the situation being irrelevant to them, positive, or stressful. Harm-loss, threat, and challenge are deeper ways to look at a situation. Harm-loss is looking at the damage that has already occured while threat is looking at the further danger to come. Challenge can be a positive way to look at a stressful situation as something to overcome.

In the situation of a friend who has lost his job that paid for his tuition costs there are a few ways his stress response could deal with this stressful event. During primary appraisal he will assess the situation he is in. Unfortunately this event could be very stressful for him and be a threat to his well-being. This job was used to pay for his tuition and now it is gone and he has no income. He is put in a situation where he will have to determine through secondary appraisal how he can handle this. If during primary appraisal he looks at the event as a challenge he will be more likely to believe that he can do something about it during secondary appraisal. In this situation he can choose to believe that he can find another job and fix the problem or he can be overwhelmed and not think that he can fix
