Relay Teaching Residency
Why are you interested in teaching in an urban school setting?

I have always aspired to make an impact on the world. Teaching in an urban school setting will enable me to make a positive impact and fulfill my share in this world while working a job I am passionate about. Students in urban schools are frequently looked over and are not taken seriously. Society does not expect students in urban schools to make it far in life, and often these children do not receive the opportunities other students receive. However we, as a society, fail to recognize the capabilities and talents all students, even in urban schools, embody. Students in urban schools are just as intelligent and worthy of success as anyone else. I want to take part to ensure

I was often degraded as my sister was the star child - intelligent, beautiful, and social. When people conversed with me, they would talk to me about my sister while taunting me for not being like her. These criticisms hurt my self-confidence in a great way. However, with time I realized that what people say should not be my focus, rather I have to achieve my own success with or without the support of others. I worked hard, got into the University of Houston, and now I have the top GPA in my graduating batch. Over time, I learned to be better at conversation and put more trust in God. I developed my personality to make sure I was not like those who spread negativity and caused others to feel bad about themselves. The person who I was 4 years ago was a depressed and insecure person, the person I am now is a strong and happy person. I learned that basing your life on the negativity people approach you with is not a good indicator of who you are. We have to make sure we grow constantly while ensuring others grow with us while keeping in mind that we all have different strengths and weaknesses. We are capable of success and we are all worthy beings, we must believe in our capabilities while supporting others. The impact of words are very real and very tough. Be kind wherever you find

Anyone can teach, but only a few teachers can teach in a way that relates back to a child's life. That kind of teacher works for change in her classroom and community. Michie's article describes how one young black teacher, Liz Kirby, works for change in her classroom, because she strives to be that special teacher.…

Because urban school are stereotypically underfunded compared to suburban schools, my idea suggests that urban schools receive a low quality of education. Donnell states, “. . . a ‘deficit paradigm’ in which everyone associated with urban school – city kids, their parents, their teachers – is viewed as damaged goods,” (Donnell, 2013, p. 152). Therefore, thinking that urban school students receive a lower quality of education than suburban schools falls under the definition of Donnell’s deficit paradigm. Donnell believes that the attitude of adults in urban schools affects the education that students receive rather than funding, Donnell goes on to state, “In thriving urban school, everyone associated with life in the school fiercely believes that each and every child can succeed at high academic levels,” (Donnell, 2013, p. 155).…

I was inspired to work within the field of education by several individuals within my family that have gone on and receive bachelor’s degrees, masters and even doctoral degrees. That has given me the drive to become a teacher; an African-American male teacher who did not have a good up-bringing and who is able to make a difference for those that maybe walking down the same path as I did. Furthermore, I believe I belong here at Bethune-Cookman University because it has been invested within me and I am a diamond…

I grew up in a family that rarely, if ever, complimented me for my achievements. It impacted my self-image, and shattered my confidence to the point where I felt uncomfortable being around or speaking in front of others. I strongly believed that I am the way I am. That my ability was limited; that I was not as special as others kids. My grades in school and college were always average, B’s and C’s. I had no favorite subject, much less one that I was good at. I did have desire to try new things, I signed up to be a cheerleader in high school but I did not make the team, so I reverted back to being afraid to try anything in which I might fail.…

The saying that we all know from when we were younger about how sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will never hurt us, is a complete lie. Just by saying a nice word can make someone’s day go from hell to them feeling like they can overcome the difficult day, but that can be the total opposite too. Someone may be having a wonderful day, seeing how nothing could go wrong, until someone is quick to judge them, and their day can dramatically change from a good day, to a day where they start down grading themselves, sometimes to the point where they may not even want to live anymore. This relates to my life because so many people these days are quick to judge and jump to conclusions before they know all the facts. For instance in the book the Blind Side by Michael Lewis, many people in the society are very quick to judge character Michael Oher. He’s big, tall, black, practically homeless, is going to a very nice school, and his mother is a drug addict and abuses alcohol. Michael is a very smart young man, many just think that “he was ignorant, but a lot of people mistake ignorance for stupidity and knowingness for intelligence.” (Lewis -). Michael was being judged every day because of where he came from, he was different from everyone else, and that the school that he was attending was…

    Urban Education

Suburban schools are located in the suburbs and rural schools are located in small, rural areas. Urban Education is defined as education taught in a school located in the city (urban areas). These schools have numerous distinct traits that make them easy to be recognizable. The students that attend these schools come from a wide variety of homes, incomes, beliefs, morals, priorities and are mostly African American, Mexican, and Asian. Unlike suburban and rural schools, the classrooms in urban education are often overcrowded with over 30 students or more in each class. I believe that with so many students (from all different backgrounds) in one classroom, behavior problems are a constant issue. So many of these students suffer at home and mimic what they see at home once they leave that setting, which is normally the school. School may be the only place they feel they can be themselves. There are also many special needs students in these schools that do not receive the needed attention due to shortage on of special education teachers available. I believe that that UHD is correlating with the Urban Education because the demands for those teachers are high. Communities in urban area need educators that would be a great asset to the students. With the many differences, the Urban Education Program will help prepare obstacles we may face and help us to prepare for some of the things we may have never experienced, such as poverty. These schools do not get the upgraded book, and the newest technology. I have noticed that in many of my previous classes, we have not focused on activities that pertain to a book or advanced technology. Many of the activities that we do are hands on, mainly relies on our ideas and imaginations rather than…

In today's society it seems that everywhere you look, you are pressured into thinking of yourself as inferior. There are signs every where you look telling you that you are not pretty enough, smart enough, thin enough, or that anything you have is not good enough. This ever-present pressure that the media puts on people causes low self-esteem (Tuberose, par 6). When people are stressed out or have low…

Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Eleanor was a part of the higher society, but she had many trials in her life. Her parents died when she was only at the young age of 11 and her husband cheated on her. Through the tough times she held her head up high and didn’t let the opinions of others affect her in any way. This quote is about how you carry yourself and your self-esteem. My way of interpreting this quote is feelings are indicators not dictators. So you can take what someone says about you and just dismiss it and realize that sometimes people tear you down to build themselves up. Or you can take it to heart and let the words of someone that is imperfect and also has faults to tear you apart. I learned the hard way that the opinions and the hurtful words of others are to be not taken to heart and that I shouldn’t let it affect how I look at myself or my self-esteem. I myself have said hurtful things to people that I wish that I could take back but I can’t. Most of those people who I have said hurtful things were extremely mature about the situation and forgave. We say thing in the heat of the moment and we are so quick to speak that sometimes the words come out so fast that you don’t have time to take a breath. So the words and actions that people say or do to hurt you shouldn’t determine how you act or how you handle the situation. You have to love people for where they are at. If you react to the situation and blow up they got the satisfaction that they got under your skin and that what they said in fact bothered you. I have also been on the receiving end of the harsh words. It’s easy to take the words to heart and hold those words against people. I have been given grace in the past and now that is what I do now to this day. Don’t let the immaturity of others determine or dictate how you feel or think about yourself.…

Several months ago, I watched a TV program showing that teachers were badly needed in many parts of our world, places like western parts of China, Southeast Asia, and Africa. It also broadcasted the stories of a couple from the United States who went to a small village in Guizhou to help those poor kids. From that moment on, I decided to be a teacher like them to help more children.…
