While Portugal was thriving with its new trading ports all along the coast of Africa, Spain quickly became quite envious and wanted a direct trade route to Asia as well. In 1492, explorer Christopher Columbus sailed west across the Atlantic Ocean and reached an island in the Caribbean mistaking it for the East Indies. Columbus's voyage paved the way for European colonization in the Americas, and also immediately increased tensions between Spain and Portugal. As the rivalry between the two countries increased Pope Alexander VI intervened hoping to restore the peace between the two countries. Alexander presented the idea of drawing a line, known as the Line of Demarcation, through the Atlantic and having all the land on the east of the line to Portugal, and Spain would have the west, which included the Americas. Portugal soon revolted against the idea arguing that Spain had more land and it was not a fair division. The line was moved farther west giving Portugal more land.
