17 November 2015 Black Lives Matter: Deeper Than Killing
Tons of people tend to think that the newly used slogan “Black Lives Matter” only consists of the murders and assaults of African Americans within the past few years that whites have committed. What they do not know is that it runs extremely deep. Black Lives Matter is a unique contribution that goes beyond extrajudicial killings of Black people by police and vigilantes (About | Black Lives Matter). The black youth fear to have children because they would hate to have their child endure such things that will be discussed later. The shooter George Zimmerman was acquitted. #BlackLivesMatter was used as a response to a post which stated “Black people. I love you. I love us. Our lives matter.”(Altman and White 22) The post was soon used again a few months later after a grand jury refused to indict a police who shot and killed yet another unarmed African American male. Articles state the hashtag was used 202,492 times, according to Twitter data compiled for TIME (Altman and White 22-23). Black Lives Matter is a movement against racial profiling against people of African American decent. It focuses on the black community’s social injustice. A lot of people who are counter to the movement tend to say, “Not just black lives matter, all lives matter”. In my opinion if you are not or haven’t gone through the obstacles us as African Americans face every day, then you would never understand how we feel about our lives. We have been dealing with such ever since the Europeans brought Africans to America. Although, we have rights today that we never had before, we still face a tremendous amount of inequality. And even though people may say they are not racist, they still would put their race above an African
