did not understand the cultural context behind the original campaign, leading to the groups being polarized rather than coming together.
The target audience for my task is people opposing the BLM movement. It shows how language and power are shaped by cultural context. This fits under Part 1. The format is a post on a social media app called Instagram. This suits the purpose, as this outlet is often used to voice opinions on controversial topics, as it reaches large audiences instantaneously. The task starts as a post written by an African American girl, who wants to communicate the real meaning of “black lives matter”. The post attempts to show the context of the phrase and movement without discrimination. This is done through the use of pronouns like “we” and “us” to create a sense of inclusion, and persuasive speech to gain a following. This is followed by a series of comments. Consequently, the audience will reach a new understanding on the issue, and be persuaded to support the movement.
