with the Elder Dragons.
The Iunctus came out with this new drug to make people "smarter" a few months ago. It's sad to say that my family started taking them and I saw changes in them after a few weeks. They were shaky, incredibly pale, their skin was starting to stretch, and strange cravings. I noticed how they were becoming degenerate - more animal like. The Iunctus passed this drug so they could control the minds of anyone who took it; the drug soon became an injection. My parents and my siblings were mindless and controlled by The Iunctus. I had to warn the others of the new drug, to stop the growth of undead.
The Iunctus invaded the 'Dark Pits' and now I'm running with the Iunctus right on my heels the scenery whipping by me in a blur. I turn my head behind me to see if they are still following me to see it was clear, I slow and walk. I have been walking for an hour now and it was getting colder by the minute, I cling onto my tartan sweater for warmth. The street lamps flicker on the dark street, a parlor came into view and I sighed in relief. My hands were purple, my skin cold. I knocked on the door checking through the cracks.
“Hello? Anyone in there?” I rap my knuckles on the thin wood door until they are red. I huff and turn advancing forward.
“Psst. Hey you!” I halted mid-step and scanned for the voices owner. I notice a small boy crouched by the parlor door. His face was pockmarked, probably from chicken pox. He was making a come-here motion with his finger, staring right at me. I moved cautiously towards the man, his eyes held no intent on moving closer towards me.
“Are you hiding from the Iunctus?” I asked pulling the sweater closer to my body, shivering. He stood up and nodded, he waved me to come inside the parlor. I closed the rickety door behind me following the man in front of me. We had entered a room with vials… a science lab. He pointed to the couch in the corner and I gladly sat down. The boy relaxed on the wooden stool in front of me.
“What is your name? I’m Andy” He popped the question suddenly, frightening me slightly.
“My name is Tony Venia,” I mumbled with indifference. Leaning back into the couch feeling the exhaustion wave over me.
“What is a pretty little girl wandering around at the ungodly hour? Don’t you know about the patrols of the Iunctus? You’re lucky they didn’t capture you.” His voice rising slightly.
“I was wanting to find a way to broadcast a warning to all the citizens of Orbis. I knew the rumors of patrols. The Iunctus found about my revulsion against the new injection and ran for my life.” I placed my hands on either side of my head, thinking deeply. He hummed, his eyes meander.
“Well, if you want to broadcast you would have to do it through the billboards. In order to reach the billboards… you would have to get into headquarters.” Andy swipes his hand through his disheveled hair.
“Easy enough, isn’t it? How am I to get into headquarters, though? Isn’t it highly guarded? “I inquired, sitting straighter leaning forward.
“I heard from a trustworthy friend that they only let in members of the Iunctus. If we can disguise you in some way you could sneak in. I’ve been stealing Iunctus membership cards for the past few weeks…” he paused, I waved him on and continued. “But I need to find my sister, she is only little, if you see her on your way can you tell her that I am here?”
“I'll give you one to broadcast the message, but you would need a hacker to override the system when you get to the magna computer.” I nodded and just smiled to Andy.
“I know somebody that can help me, could you give me the card?” Andy hurried and scrambled around the room to a stack of plastic cards and handed it to me. I turned around about to run out the door, “Thank you Andy, and I will try to find your sister.” He gave me a sad smile and waved me goodbye.
I was running until my feet almost gave out, I reach my destination not long after I talked to Andy. I walked up to the suburban house, the bricks chipped and scattered. Knocking on the cedar mahogany door rapidly. I stood back from the door. The door opened to see the crazy girl tackle the floor. I laugh and help her up, but I soon turned serious. Her eyes widened and advanced inside the house.
“So Tony, what has made you come to my humble abode?" She whipped around with her arms crossed, hair shellacked. I hesitated and cleared my throat.
“I need a favor… I need you to come with me to hack into the Iunctus magna computer…” I was tapping my foot, waiting for an answer.
“You're asking wayfarer Amelia, for a favor?
What for?” Kicking my foot across the floor I looked back at Amelia.
“I need to warn people about the new injection, it is making us into mindless slaves for the Iunctus. We need to stop or the world will be over.” I ignited.
“So, what's so bad about the world ending?” she was pushing buttons I never knew were there, it's always this way with her. It's either her way or the highway, sometimes she will agree with you. It nice to know that I always can make her agree.
“I don't know about you Amelia, but I would like to keep my humanity. If you want to work against your will for the Iunctus, go right ahead; but I want to save others too, even if it means I die in the end.” She glared at me and sighed with defeat.
“You know I can never win with you. Fine I will help you.” I jumped happily and cheered. I started walking, Amelia trailing behind me.
“Great. We better leave now or it will be too late.” I sped up my pace, into a slow run.
The woods were beautiful once before the Floating Aedificium came. The sun couldn't reach them or the rain, soon the trees and plants withered and became friendly homes for rodents. Now it was gray and brown, the leaves shriveled on the ground, the tree limbs mangled and ugly. The edge of the woods was in view and I went into a sprint, standing by the end. Light invades my senses, the end of the Floating …show more content…
Aedificium.
“It's beautiful, isn't it? It's been years since I've seen the sun.” I feel the sun on my skin and melt with delight. I nod and look past the sun and see buildings in the distance. One had the Iunctus flag waving freely. We trek to the headquarters with a real intent.
The lands were dry, the grass scraping our legs creating puny holes in our pants; perspiring heavily. We had entered the city, tall buildings with many advertisements, lavish people walking down the streets. We were out-of-place looking like hapless travelers. Remember my real intention on coming here we ran to the headquarters building.
Headquarters had glass surrounding the exterior, gold trimming around the doors and ceilings. I rummage into my pockets and find the fake I.Ds, handing one to Amelia. What was odd is that these had no name or picture... just a pin.
Walking past a guard as we travel through the halls finding the magna computer. The guard seemed to know we didn't quite fit, staring intently at us.
“Halt.” the guard shouted, advancing slowly. We turn and face him with confused faces.
“I need to see some ID before you can advance.” we fished out our ID's and flashed them at him and giggled. I mentally gag. "What is your business here?” he persisted.
“We were sent to program the magna computer, we're new, and we got lost,” Amelia said sickly sweet to him. Amelia was always the good one when it came to acting.
“You may continue,” The guard directed us to the computer.
We walked until the guard was out of earshot.
“That was easy, don't you think? He sounded new,” Amelia asked me and looked behind us. I nodded and just kept on walking passing rooms. Rooms filled with undead, probably where they stabilize their new additions to their army.
The rooms were getting sparse and eerier. The fluorescent lights flicker above one door and we check inside to spot the magna computer panel. We step inside and close the large door. The room was empty, nothing to worry about.
“Hurry Amelia!” I whisper to her. She went right to work. Pulling codes and placing keys. She looked at me for a brief second.
“Type in your warning, but once you're done it will override and then the Iunctus will know.” I nodded and sighed, typing away, and press enter.
“To the citizens of Orbis, you may have or not heard of the new injection to make you ‘smarter’ this was a hoax. The Iunctus have lied to us, they collaborate with the Elder Dragons our mortal enemies. The Iunctus are making an army of undead, this injection will now turn all of us unto undead. Proceed with caution to the panic pods designated.” the warning went into a
frenzy.
In the corner of the room, there was a hologram television. The citizens of Orbis going wild undead coming out of the shadows. People tripping over each other, once the pods were full I sigh in relief. But soon that diminished. The most frightful creature - with large wings and glowing scales swoops down, snatching the pods off the ground. I cry out and pale. I had failed my mission to save the people.
Now the Elder Dragons will turn every mortal into undead for their army, but for what? To win a war with other extraterrestrials? I hear a loud scream from outside the door, fear sinking in. I scan the room to see that Amelia had left. I was alone. My world was ending right before my eyes. The door open peacefully the leader of the Iunctus standing peacefully with a long needle. He steps forward and I step back, repeating the motion before my back hits the wall.
“Brother please, don't turn me into a mindless slave like the others,” I beg, tears casting down my cheeks.
“Sister, don't you remember what you said to me when I left?” I cringe with my head bent over and cry louder.
“Let me help you… ‘Everything happens for a reason’ sound familiar? You are part of something big, be proud.” he boasts, prideful.
“Pride is for cowards... I would rather die than think that this for good. You’re a traitor, imposter; belonging behind bars. I hate you.” my crying died down and anger raging.
“Too bad little sister, deal with It.” he didn't wait another moment until he injected me and I cried out, my mind deteriorating. My mortal life ending, my undead life starting. I won't even remember my name or what I did. Neither would I remember what I tried to do. The world was over, mortals are now undead, and I couldn’t stop it. To them I was only a mere addition to their army, I was a zombie not a monster, but a messenger of a warning.
