She is a girl that came to Ada to help her on the farm and her and Ada become good friends. She is uneducated, practical, hardworking and at one with the natural world. “’Number one,’ the girl said, ‘if you’ve got a horse I can plow all day. Number two, Old Lady Swanger told me your straits. Something for you to keep in mind would be that every man worth hiring is off and gone’” (51). This quote is when Ruby first meets Ada and she is trying to convince Ada that she’s just as good of a worker as any man. A significant incidence involving Ruby is when she tests Ada on how well she knows her own farm by seeing if she can tell what kind of a tree is rustling by the sound of its leaves. This simple act opens up Ada’s eyes to everything she doesn’t know and gives her more initiative to learn. Ruby’s impact on the book as a whole is as a foil for Ada. Ruby is a practical girl with focus and goals based in reality which is in sharp contrast to the dreamy, intellectual Ada.…

She, unlike the other characters we encounter in the story, ponders over the caste question. In one sense Ruby Turpin is better than her husband, Claud, and most other Southerners. She constantly ponders and obsesses over the classification of people as she may have a guilty conscience. Her constant thinking might make her able to come to terms with her own attitude. Claud is a man that accepts the bias culture that he has grown and lived with. Moreover, he neither questions nor ponders about the social question he is surrounded with. He chooses to ignore it. On the other hand, Turpin falls asleep pondering this question. Quote. Her nonstop mulling over this question shows that it is possible for her to grow into a more perfect Christian. The idea that while others do not think about the bias they have grown with, Ruby Turpin thinks about this social norm every day. Ruby Turpin at her core is a person with contradicting beliefs: a Christian, and a judgmental Southern. She is a person capable of being apathetic to the plight of others. She agrees with the spirt of the song. The gospel song’s message “You go to your church / And I’ll go to mine / But we’ll all walk along together … We’ll help each other out” (496), which is played in the reception room, states that all though we are all different we are all Christians and that we…

Dreams have been a part of humanity for decades and as technology progresses the mystery has continually been brought to attention. While science has enhanced dramatically, no true explanation of dreams has been made, there are countless theories behind the purpose and cause of dreams. Descartes was one of the many philosophers and scientists to investigate the strange world of dreams and what it reveals about the “real” world. The ambiguity and obscurity of dreams allows interesting interpretations not only from scientists but also artists. Christopher Nolan’s film Inception demonstrates Descartes' ideas of dreams being a false reality and the presence of a deceiver creating these illusions, just as the main character Cobb tricks individuals…
