The following are three essays that I worked on during the semester. Most of it remains the same, while some of my ideas have developed. The only major changes made were redirecting the ideas in the Where is Waldo Now essay. In English 1102 I struggled with a lot, Professor Grant really challenged what I thought I knew about writing. Being that English is my second language, language barriers normally do not reflect in my speech or writing. I felt that this semester really showed me that I still had work to do. Passive voice, comma slices, forming arguments, and grammar are some of the many skills that I worked on during this semester. I attended the Writing Center as often as I could; I also asked questions during office hours. I worked on perfecting these skills in my other classes as well by reading out loud. By exploring these different options my essay grades improved 15 points. Hopefully my portfolio and future papers reflects the time and practice I’ve put into my writing.…
In my first essay, I wrote a rhetorical analysis The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This essay was created to interpret that the American Dream can never truly be achieved no matter what you may have or do. While writing this essay I choose this novel because not only have I read the piece, but I found it interesting enough to analysis especially when it came to the American Dream concept. While writing this piece I took a risk and wrote on a whole novel instead of a smaller piece which would have been a greater opinion. The reason I choose this was not only because I loved the book, but I wanted to see how I would have done analysis this novel and testing my writing skills. In this essay, I took on the challenge and while I believed…
I learned two major things about my writing skills during this class. First, when presenting an essay for peer review, make sure that it is not a very rough draft. Second, the types of essay styles can change easily when writing. Even though my paper is supposed to be expository, using certain words and tone can create a totally different essay style.…
This class has taught me many things about myself along with many necessary skills needed while writing. I know now that, through hard work and determination, I can achieve what I might think to be impossible. While reflecting back on my initial writing abilities, I see the weak, uneducated style of writing. Each essay shows my progression and improvement, and, after a while, the class began to become much easier. Today, after practicing throughout my essays this semester, I believe that I, in fact, have…
Arguably the most important skill that I have learned is that it is essential to plan my essays. Prior to this class, I would just write all of my thoughts down without creating an outline. After that, I would just briefly proofread my essay and that was my final copy. Now, I make sure I spend a decent amount of time on an outline and make it incredibly detailed so that my thoughts are all in line with each other and overall, the essay makes sense. Then, I will read over my rough draft multiple times and have other people proofread it as well, just to make sure that it makes sense and is as clear as it can be. My papers went from taking less than an hour to write to taking 2 or 3 hours at the least.…
Additionally, I learned about being careful to write toward an audience. In prior drafts, I had not focused much on my audience, but as I read my paper, I realized that I could not feel a connection with the piece. However, when I focused on a specific audience, I realized that my paper was better. After learning about the importance of audience, I shared it with my students in a minilesson.…

I have learned about the different types of essays, such as: the remembering essay, the compare and contrast essay, the cause and effect essay, and the reflective essay. I have also learned different techniques to set up an essay. An outline is one of the most important and useful things I have learned this semester. It helps me organize my essays and it also makes it ten times easier to write the essays. Another important thing I have learned from this class is how to use MLA format. These notes are the things that have helped enhance my knowledge about…
As my English 101 class comes to an end there are many valuable lessons we learned in this class. We learned how to respond to the author. We learned how to write in the They Say/I Say style, which I plan on using this style to write in most of my papers from now on. Another lesson we learned in this class was how to create a thesis with tension. The lessons I learned in English 101 will most likely be used again as I progress on with English 102 as well as the rest of my college career.…
the assignment was to write a second person point of view informative on how to become any occupation of our choice (Naturally I chose the occupation astronaut, a occupation I knew practically nothing on beyond what I could pick up from Sandra Bullock and George Clooney). The essay was difficult to write, it challenged the entirety of my knowledge of grammar. I persevered and wrote a great paper I was proud of. In that class I learned more than how to better my writing but how to appreciate writing and the power it has. It was that class that made me realize the pen truly is mightier than the sword, as lame as that sounds.…
There were many papers that we wrote in class that truly racked my brain. I came from an English class were the writing was very structured and extremely analytical. The writing that we did in class was rather different. English 101 was the first writing course that I have taken were the writing is completely up to me, and that was hard. It was hard to the aspect that I didn't know who to write the paper but rather how to structure it. That was my single biggest struggle in the course. I hate to say it, but the particular writing that we did in class didn't really have any impact on any…

My junior English teacher, Mrs. Doherty, was different compared to other teachers that I had. She was more interested in the process of learning rather than the final result. She would have us go step by step with our drafts, working on them in class for each paragraph. We had peer teaching exercises that allowed everyone to get involved and learn about their essay while aiding each other with their papers. Mrs. Doherty’s class helped me to learn how to accomplice problems at my own pace.…
From this class I had the opportunity to meet my classmates as well as them helping me write better papers. Every time we get the chance to peer edit, I sometimes get different types of response on my papers from my classmates. These responses help give me a better idea in how I can improve my papers. For example, things they write down in how I need to transition my next paragraph or sometimes, a paragraph might need to be more in depth. In addition it gives me and idea of how people view my writing and what I need to change. After peer editing I receive comments about grammers or spelling mistakes on my paper. When I get the chance to peer edit, this helps me understand and it gives me ideas in different writing technique. Such as writing better sentences and to see what other readers see in your paper, which can be a totally different view that I might have had to offer. I also learn new words in the process of editing their papers!…
