Welcome and thank you for joining me here this morning. Today, I’d like to discuss how Donald Trump used the language of leadership in his campaign speeches to influence his audience. More specifically his supporters in West Palm Beach, Florida, where one of his rallies took place. The fact that this speech took place in Florida is key to understanding why Trump used the language that he did as Florida is typically a swing state during the election. It was obvious that his main purpose was to convince any undecided voters and to win the state of Florida in the electoral college. Because of this, Trump made a clear effort to speak consistently about the two topics he knew could generate a reaction out of the crowd: 1) how despicable a candidate Hillary Clinton is and 2) how estimable he is in comparison. In discussing the former, he went so far as to only refer to Clinton as “crooked Hillary” or “the Clinton Machine” throughout. By calling Hillary Clinton “the Clinton Machine” he demonized her and created the idea that she isn't human, further pinning his supporters against her.
