Rhode Island was the first colony to formally declare independence from Great Britain.

Rhode Island is Dutch for “Red Island”.

Home to first Jewish synagogue and Baptist church in the New World.

Unlike other settlers, Williams paid the Indians for the land because he and others believed it was the right thing to do.

The importation of slaves was prohibited in 1652 but was not enforced until 1774.
