A person with complex needs could have a book about themselves to carry around with them, the book may talk about things like how they communicate and their likes and dislikes, this will let others get to know them. Spending time together and learning how to communicate together, finding out how they communicate and what works for them is also a good way to get to know someone. You can use technology to help someone communicate e.g. computers. You can use objects e.g. books, football, or a spoon. You can use pictures, symbols or photos. You can use signs e.g.Makaton.
