Just like any other countries, the people in Russia were not exempted from injustices during the pre-revolutionary period. The revolutionary Russia faced various economic problems due to the many unfavorable political conditions it faced. Majority of the people were poor and some of them did not even own lands (Go Social Studies Go). Aside from that, working conditions were unfavorable for the workers, and Russia’s corrupt bureaucratic system broke the people. Instead of being an effective working machinery of the tsarist government, bureaucrats were condemned by the Russians. This is because they were easily bribed since most of them were uneducated. The story started with how the narrator, Poprishchin, experienced something odd the day he woke up late. He thought that the very reason why the chief of their department always gave him a sour face was due to the fact that the latter was jealous because of this work - he sat in the director's office and sharpened the quills for His Excellency (Gogol 183). Aside from that, the man in the story mentioned that people during his time wore capes with long collars, but he wore capes with the short collars. As the days went by, the clerk realized how meaningless his job was. Aside from sharpening his employer's quills, he was also tasked with copying the information of the different departments. His simple work made him realized how people treated him without kindness and courtesy (Gogol). People never listened to him because they do not hear and see him. The daily entries written in the journal shows how slowly became mad when he realized his insignificance (Gogol). Aside from that, Poprishchin contended that the civil servants did nothing but sat on top on another and acquired all the best things that they could get (Gogol). He blamed these people for the weary life he has had. He realized that when people discovered their happiness and made efforts to reach the same, high officials enter the picture and snatch it away from them
