SRD Personal Statement
It started off in the fifth grade when my mother thought it would be a great idea for me to join the GT Program (Gifted and Talented Program). I had never thought myself to be gifted or talented at all, but my mother really wanted me to join. Two weeks after saying yes I entered into my counselor’s room and took the test along with two other students to see if I would qualify; I did. For the next three I saw no difference between myself and the other students. My report card might have said that I was GT but I certainly never felt like it. However, this completely changed when I entered high school. During my sophomore year I noticed that my schedule had something call SRD (Scientific Research and Design). I was not very enthusiastic at all …show more content…
I decided to stay in SRD through my sophomore and junior years; I gained so many qualities, opportunities, and accomplishments that I would have never thought possible as a fifth grader. One of the requirements for this class is to create a project. My sophomore year I was incredibly shy and nervous, and the fact that I had to present my project to my classmates and later on to judges in our school science fair made the class a bit discouraging. Against all odds, I placed 3rd place in Behavioral Sciences, and I advanced to compete against all the other high school of the region. Here I did not place but I can honestly say that that caused me to break out of my shell and become the person I am today. The year after that I would be one the best presenters in my class and later on in all my classes. I would place 1st in the school science fair and 3rd in my category against 40 other students. “3rd place in Behavioral and Social Sciences”: the title of one of my biggest accomplishments in my high school career. It is a reminder of the insecurities I overcame- one of them being public speaking. I also learned about how great a person is able to be even though there might be obstacles along the way. Today I am that student who volunteers to present and will work hard through any barrier to become

Then during sophomore year and especially junior year. I realized what I wanted to do as a career. I noticed that I enjoyed cooking a lot and being in the kitchen. That's what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. One day I found out I had to switch schools. The new school I'm in Has a culinary program which I was very excited about. I asked them to place me in there. On the first day of school, I saw my schedule and I was very excited. I knew this is what I enjoy doing, but I didn't know if I wanted to continue it after high school. Through this program I learned that I do. In order for me to go to culinary school, I had to do my best in school because culinary school is not affordable. Especially for my family. Throughout my four years of high school, I have consistently pushed myself beyond my limits and comfort zones in attempt to discover my place in the world. I spent most of first two years discovering who I was as an individual, ultimately manifesting into inspiration for success. I grew out of “fitting in” and decided to turn my life and aspirations towards a greater direction; on this road of discovery, I separated myself from those who valued arrogance and indifference. “Nerd Squad” is what I am a part of today, which is why I am currently confident enough to apply for the National Honors Society Scholarship. I believe I have grown into a tenacious, sympathetic, and joyous young man that the entire school has seen develop, and I am honored…

From there, I hope to study to be accepted into medical school and specialize in pediatrics. When preparing for medical school, the advice one hears are to become a well-rounded student. Through my DECA experiences I have been able to develop leadership skills that will help me thrive in my future. Over the three years I have been involved, I have stepped out my comfort zone and made a difference in my local DECA chapter, community, and my future. Now taking the responsibility of being a DECA officer, as the chapter president, has allowed me to continue to grow and develop my leadership, communication, and social skills. Working with the Milan DECA Chapter members has proven how difficult and enjoyable being a leader is. At times leading so many events can be stressful; however, the completion of the events pushes me further. In order to reach the goal of becoming ‘well-rounded’, I used DECA skills to organize my time to join other extracurriculars within my community. Along with DECA, I participate in 4-H which is a non-profit organization in counties all across the nation that prepares youth to make a positive impact on their communities. Furthermore, I lead my 4-H club in a Relay For Life team through the American Cancer Society. Additionally, I am a dedicated musician, drum major, and the first Milan High School Flute Choir Director. I am an active participant in the peer education program at Milan High School. I am so thankful for the opportunities to be a leader within my class, school, community, county, and…

At a young age, I waited on the benches for my mother to retrieve me from carpool. I observed my peers laughing together as they walked towards the gym for after-school sports. My mother, who soon arrived to find her kindergarten son sitting in solitude, scheduled numerous parent-teacher conferences. She would share her concerns while my teachers assured her that my "individuality" was what attracted friends to me. I had been a leader rather than a follower regardless of the opinion of others, and, to this day, that has remained static. I have evolved from that careless kindergarten leader, to an aspiring college graduate.…

It was not until, the end of my Sophomore year when I joined Sallisaw Youth Coalition(SYC), that I realized that this small town has plenty to offer its citizens. It may not offer malls or luxurious restaurants but it offers all that it can manage for its residents. From the moment I affiliated with SYC, I became involved with activities in my community that I didn't even know existed. The more active I became with SYC the more my perception of the town changed. I began to see the town as a supportive friendly environment. If I accomplished anything from growing up in a small town it's learning that you truly can't judge a book by its' cover. This town may appear horrible and hopeless but the heart of this town is its warm generous people who care to improve it. Many of the warm generous people are the teachers that want to witness their students succeed in life. I dedicate my academic success to my wonderful instructors. My exceptional teachers taught me that if you apply yourself to the difficulties at hand you will develop skills that will advance your knowledge in the future. This advice is kept close to my heart and serves as a support when tasks seem challenging. My ambitions for becoming a script/screenwriter are usually diminished or frowned upon…

Everyone has a story. A rhyme and reason for what they do and why they do it. Sharing those experiences with the world bring out the true flavor of who you are. Before I came to Howard, I was so shy to share my story with people. I was uncomfortable in finding and expressing myself, and I was jealous of those who did not find it a struggle. While sitting back and seeing my peers impact others by how they expressed themselves, it started to make me get out of my shell as well. Dia Bui’s story that we went over the first week of school was something that really made an impact on me early on in the year.…

I have seen many people, who most of the times take the opportunity provided for them. And have succeeded in their life. I also had the same opportunity in my high school. There was science exhibition in my school. Many students had participated in the exhibition. I had the opportunity to participate in the exhibition. First I was not going to participate in the science exhibition. As one member was not feeling well I had to take part in the science exhibition. This exhibition proved a great help to me to select my major. The project was based on the “Intermediate Fuel” i.e. it shows how we can utilize the waste products to convert into high energy fuel. This project was based on the principle of conservation of energy. We had applied various principles and this principle helped me to develop interest in the field of science. And I was able to choose a right major. This also gave me an opportunity to meet new people and friends, which proved a great help to me to improve my speaking ability in front of new people. To top it off, I was matched with in my opinion the best partner available. Danielle allowed me to get out of my comfort zone, but at the same time she knew my weaknesses and assisted me through all my blemishes.
