Sag Harbor Movie Analysis

Sag Harbor was a wonderful example of how people could overcome segregation and wrongful classification to establish and build a community where African Americans did not have to fear the people in their environment. They were many positive stories that showed how regardless of unfair and unequal treatment many Black Americans prospered by creating a loving and family oriented community that contrasted with the lavish life among the rich. Sadly, the livelihood of this wonderful community was threatened by those who had the financial resources to buy or force out those who were unable to keep up with the changing economy. It was very disheartening seeing the young man in the film say it would be difficult to keep his grandparents’ home. Despite
him knowing the harsh reality of the financial hardship he would face he believed his family’s legacy was worth fighting for. This film sheds a light on how the rich can restructure an entire community by threatening to uproot the same individuals who created it. This community was based on family and friendships. Whereas the rich viewed Sag Harbor as a playground or a vacation spot. It becomes clear with money comes power, influence, and unlimited access to resources which may raise or decrease the economy and the quality of life for many people within a specific community.
