Violence in schools has spread widely throughout the nation, leading to uneasy feelings among students, families, and residents of Virginia. However, there are many ways we can stop or prevent future violence in schools. Having enhanced security in schools is a great way to help reduce problems in schools. Schools should install surveillance cameras so school officials can be aware of their surroundings and/or have the capability to spot danger and possible threats. Schools should have armed security in every school and be the first line of defense to ensure safety for our children. Although, some argue that these enhancements may cost more than what the schools have in their budget, but an effort in keeping our kids safe is worth every penny.
Governor Bob McDonnell was serving as the state’s attorney general of Virginia at the time of the 2007 VA Tech shooting incident occurred. He issued an executive order creating a school safety task force and directing Cabinet secretaries and all the school divisions in the state to examine previous safety audits (Washington Time’s Inside Politics, 2012). Gov. Bob McDonnell seemed open to having more armed security in schools, saying, “’I think we need to do whatever’s necessary to fit the threat’” (Washington Times, 2012). The task force’s recommendations that Gov. Bob McDonnell entailed includes training programs for armed school guards, which the group says would give officials the ability to defend school personnel and students without having to wait for police to arrive. The training program stated that in the past two decades they have witnessed a drop in incidences of school violence, including homicide rates and violent crimes (Washington Times). Parents may say that mass murders could still happen, but I believe this training program will be a set of professionals that are skilled to face this kind of threat and decrease numbers of fatalities.
