Science Fair Project: The Catapult
I am Jessica Bogde and the title of my project is, “The Catapult.” I chose to do this project because in the fourth grade, one of my peers inspired me to build a catapult because she built it as her Science Fair Project. I also wanted to do this project because I love building things and this project just added to my experience in building things. I chose to work alone on this project because I work faster when I am independent because other people mess around sometimes. I also chose to do this alone because I couldn’t find anyone that wanted to build a catapult, too. The inventor of this apparatus was the Greek Dionysius the Elder of Syracuse. He invented it about 400 BCE. The inventor was trying to create a new weapon for warfare, and …show more content…

The three primary energy storage mechanisms are tension, torsion, and gravity. The catapult is capable of inflicting great damage. The main type of catapults used was the Trebuchet, mangonel, onager, and Ballista. The type of catapult I built is the Trebuchet, which was a battle machine used in ancient times to throw heavy payloads at enemies. The payload was able to launch a remote distance and had the ability to do considerable damage, either by shattering enemy walls down or striking the enemy while inside their stronghold. Obviously, mine doesn’t throw heavy items like the catapults that the army used, but it is a smaller replica of the type of catapult that they did …show more content…

On Tuesday, September 26, at around 6 PM, I looked for the wood that I would use for my project in my garage. My dad and I found a very long piece of wood that he had from one of his construction jobs that would work good for this project. I then cleaned the dust from that piece of wood and was done for that day. On Wednesday, September 27, at around 2:30 PM, we began building the catapult. It took us around two hours or so to complete it and I was done with the building part of this project. Only my dad helped me with building the catapult. He helped me cut the long piece of wood into smaller pieces and he supplied me with the supplies that I needed for this project. The materials that I used for this project was wood of course, screws, a bungee cord, the covering of a pen, and a plastic spoon. The title of my Science project this year is The Catapult. The catapult was invented as a replacement of the crossbows. As they made the crossbows larger, the catapults became larger as well. At first, the catapult was the weapon of choice in warfare, but as soon as the invention of gunpowder and artillery, the catapult wasn’t used as much anymore. The gunpowder and artillery quickly replaced the catapult and became the weapon of choice. The grade that I believe I should receive is at least an A because I put a lot of work into this project and my catapult shoots pretty far as

The counterweight trebuchet was extremely effective however it was subject to a great deal of stress during operation leading to a shortened life cycle. In order to resolve this problem, the counterweight was placed upon a hinge. This allowed it to swing as it reached the bottom of its fall, consequently reducing the stress placed upon the frame and throwing arm. This redesign not only improved the life span of the device, but also increased the total distance traveled. By increasing the distance covered, engineers were able to also increase the rotational speed of the lever arm, thus increasing the launch speed and force of the projectile.…

Richard Jordan Gatling was, for most of his life, involved in the making of farm equipment. The son of a North Carolina plantation owner, Gatling was living in Cincinnati during the outbreak of the war, and came up with the idea for his weapon, according to legend, while watching the wheel of a paddleboat turn. The design of the weapon, however, also owes at least some of its inspiration to the sowing and seeding machines that would have been familiar to Gatling.…

    Physics Of A Trebuchet

A trebuchet is built by using the energy of a falling counterweight to launch the payload, using mechanical advantage to get the highest speed possible. For maximum launch speed the counterweight has to be much heavier than the payload. This is due to the face that the counterweight will fall quickly to launch the payload. A trebuchet basically involves a lever and a sling. On one end of the lever, there is the counterweight, which is the force for the trebuchet. The sling is then attached to the other end of the lever. The trebuchet relies on the principle of the counterweight, which stores potential energy that can be converted to kinetic energy of the payload. This action will then cause the payload to launch into the air. To achieve the…

The catapult is a one of the earliest weapons used for mass destruction that we know of. They are also one of the simplest weapons to make that would affect a large population. The catapult is a device used to fling an object a very long distance or at a high velocity to inflict damage to a large population. According to Baintighearn Aimiliona Tevnane the first catapult was constructed and used in battle in 400 BC by the Greeks. According to lordsandladies.org It was also that very same year that the Mangonel catapult was introduced by the Romans. For many years after the Mangonel was used throughout Europe. It also made its way over to France and England in 1216 where it was used a lot by both of their militaries. The mangonel catapult was used to fling heavy object either over walls or into the walls to destroy them. You could also use it to just shoot at an army and take out a large number of soldiers. The soldiers would use almost anything that they could find to launch. As long as it fit inside the bowl of the catapult.…
