Second Competency
The first competency emphasized a good cooperation with other health care professions. The difficulty in developing this competency may due to the patient specific conditions that may give a health care provider more “tough time” if proper communication were not made before interacting with the patient. For example, during my first clinical rotation, My CI needed to treat her last patient of the day, however, the patient was in a bad mood and reluctant to participate to therapy. My CI asked me to bring the patient to the therapy gym. It took me a great effort to explain the benefit of exercise and finally he said he will come after napping for two hours. I went back to my CI and told her the patient decision. My CI said that she needed to leave in one hour because she has children in day care that needed to be picked up. So she went to the patient room and brought the patient to the gym for exercise. The patient was very unhappy to complete his therapy session, which might cause him giving a hard time to the nurse and CNAs, who would come to see him later of the day. I always reflect back about how to deal with this case better. The CNAs and nurse would have been frustrated since the therapy made him unhappy. Maybe communicating with the nurse and …show more content…
The difficulty in developing the 2nd competency may due to the overlap of the scope of practice. For example, as PTs, we frequently get patient referred from physicians. Though we may have the same tested done on the patient as the physicians did the focus of intervention are different. For certain treatment approach we need to discuss with the physician and sometimes they have their own opinions on certain treatment approach. Understanding of the scope of practice of other health care profession and a good communication are essential to make the agreement on the patient treatment plan and promote his or her

In order to establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I first begin with providing a clean and organized classroom. All toys and equipment are sanitized on a daily basis, all outlets are covered and all fixtures are mounted to the walls to prevent from tipping over. Upon entering the classroom every parent is required to sign a daily health check in which the teacher and the parent both assess the health of each child. Healthy meals and snacks are provided to each and every child, keeping in mind, the allergies that each child has. Medicines are also carried for each student that requires it on a daily basis. The classroom tables are wiped down and sanitized and the floor is swept after each meal. The children also brush their teeth after meals to help the children gain healthy brushing habits. The teacher child ratio is maintained at all times.…

Being able to function well with others within the space of healthcare providing collaborative, patient-centred care is regarded to be vastly essential. Whilst competencies can be unpacked as many things, communication, being one of those things, is stressed to be the one that is required in order for the healthcare environment to operate effectively. But, according to The Combined Universities Interprofessional Learning Unit (CUILU), they have identified capabilities to be a better way in reflecting the need to respond and adapt to the changing healthcare environment. These capabilities include but not restricted to some of the following; ethical practice and Interprofessional…

The third and final strategy I hope to use in my learning need is work with the interprofessional team in educating nurses on the ward. Completing this final strategy will build on the interprofessional collaboration of the floor. This can be described as a way of maintaining effective teamwork in professional groups by impacting the patients, family and the health care team (Zwarentein, Goldman, and Reeves, 2009). As a future novice nurse it is important to understand the competencies related to the role I will pertain as a RN. According to the National Interprofessional Competency Framework, the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative (CIHC) speaks of, the competencies and how they benefit interprofessional collaboration (CIHC, 2010).…

239). Knowing the scope of practice of other healthcare professionals helps to ensure that the most qualified professional is assigned to each task and assists with spreading the workload in an efficient manner. Secondly, nurses who know the professional role of others are more likely to seek out the contributions and professional advice that these individuals offer. This interprofessional collaboration provides a greater knowledge base, as well as new perspectives that result in novel solutions to problems. Thirdly, knowing the scope of others’ practice minimizes many misconceptions and stereotypes among the members of healthcare teams. Minimizing stereotypes helps to address the destructive aspects of hospital hierarchy and, fourthly, stimulates an attitude of respect for all roles and areas of expertise. Finally, this competency identifies common professional skills that overlap the roles and expertise of other team members. These commonalities support the efforts of the team and promote consistent care that meets clients’ needs (MacDonald et al.,…

Core Competencies of IPE Increased demand for care of diverse patients and cultural needs of patients with complex health care needs has necessitated increased collaboration among health care professionals, and respect for the contribution of other disciplines to provide patient centered care ((Ward, Schiller, & Goodman, 2014). To address this need, core competencies for IPE were developed by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) committee consisting of six health care disciplines. The purpose of the core competencies were to ensure that health care disciplines include the skills and knowledge of interprofessional education in their school curriculum. Another purpose of the core competencies are to guide educators, faculty and health care providers as they educate students to provide patient-centered care to the public and the community at large. To promote involvement and positive relationships with families and communities I believe that an open door policy is essential to have. I would do this by talking with the parents every day at drop off and pick up time. During the morning drop off time I would be able to find out how the previous afternoon went, if I wasn't there to see it myself, and how the child slept the previous night. I could also find out whether or not the child ate breakfast. During afternoon pick up time I would be able to tell the parent how the child's day went. I would also keep daily sheets for each child that would include bathroom breaks, what and how much the child ate throughout the day, as well as any concerns or questions I might have about the child. Another way I would keep the open door policy is by sending home a weekly newsletter informing the parents of what would be going on that week in the classroom. I would encourage parents to call the center or stop by to see how things are going for the child. I know that when parents are working they, often times, wonder about the child's day. By calling or stopping by they are able to peek in on the child and get updates are how the day is going. I would also encourage parents to attend any special event that the child is apart of, such as Christmas programs. The parents would, also, be more than welcome to have lunch with the child on his or her birthday if they are available to do so. I believe that, as a teacher, it is important to be the support system for the child while he or she is at school and while the parents are away at work. If the parents are working on something, such as using manners or potty training, I would be more than willing to help them by reinforcing that task while the child is at school. It is very important for both the child and the parents to have consistency in their daily routine. I believe that by…

Core Competency involves incorporating diversity into practice. This skill is associated with several practice behaviors that I will be linking to specific artifacts. The first practice behavior is transforming one’s behavior in response to recognition of one’s biases based in difference and culture. This practice behavior relates to an Alcohol Anonymous meeting that I attended, and I had to write a reflection for my substance abuse class. The second practice behavior is modifying and adapting mainstream knowledge and interventions to meet \ needs of diverse populations and that challenge oppression. This consisted of a population at risk paper I wrote for class regarding human trafficking. The third practice behavior is applying strengths…

Similarly, quality competency enables the nurse practitioner to apply skills and to use the best evidence to improve the quality of clinical practice (Thomas et al., 2012). Leadership competency obliges NPs to foster a spirit of collaboration and innovation to improve healthcare and an NP with strengths in policy competencies develops and contributes to health policy changes (Thomas et al. 2012). NPs that are competent in technology and IL promote safe and effective care through combining technology and scientific health information. NPs evaluate the impact of health care delivery and organizational practices when they develop health delivery competency (Thomas et al. 2012). ]NPs are competent ethically when they are able to apply ethical principles and decisions to complex issues related to the patient, family members, population, and systems of care. Finally, independent practice competencies enable and require nurse practitioners to practice independently with the highest level of professional accountability (Thomas et al., 2012). Upon graduation, these competencies are needed to meet the demands, the complexity and challenges of our current healthcare environment (Thomas et al.,…
