All of the service users within my work place have communication problem and they need support in order to be able to effectively express themselves. That’s why is it important for me as a one of carers for people with communication problem to be aware of the individual preferred method of communication and also to support all service users to use their preferred method of communication. Service Users have the right to communicate with their own chosen method and their choice should be respected by supporting them. Communication is a basic human right. Without communication service users are unable to realize and exercise their rights. All service users have their right to “freedom of expression” (Human Rights Act 1998). If they would not be able to communicate their rights would be denied.
In order to be able to communicate with each individual in my work place (Residential Care Home for adults with learning difficulties) I first have to get to know each of the individual as well as their preferred method of communication.
Learning disabilities
All of the service users in my work place have learning disability. Most of them have some form of specific communication needs. The range of communication skills differs from mildly, moderately to severe. Two out of six service users have no effective verbal speech their communication needs are met and supported using visuals, objects of reference.
