Sheltered Observation Protocol Model

This presentation was informational about SIOP. I learned that SIOP stands for Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol Model. Sarah Eakin stated, “SIOP is a research-based and validated instructional model that has proven effective in addressing the academic needs of English learned throughout the United States.” SIOP consists of eight components: lesson preparation, building background, comprehensible input, strategies, interaction, practice/application, lesson delivery, review and assessment. I also learned ways to integrate SIOP in the classroom. Teachers can prepare lessons that support the objectives and standards. Also, teachers can learn about their ELL students backgrounds. Teachers are mentors to help support and encourage higher level thinking by asking open-ended questions. Teachers can have hands-on
Most importantly, teachers should get feedback from students. For then, teachers can edit their lesson plans to help student succeed. Next, I learned about benefits of using the SIOP model. ELL students’ abilities and skills will increase. In addition, teachers will benefit because the SIOP gives teachers an outline to help ELL students achieve success.
I will apply what I learned about SIOP in my future classroom by using the eight components in my lesson plans. The first component is lesson preparation. I will prepare my ELL students to know ways to communicate their needs to me. For instance, I will teach them basic phrase so I can know if they understand the material or they do not understand the material. The second component is building background. In my lesson plans, I will start with a KWL chart to see what students already know about the topic. The third component is comprehensible input. I can create vocabulary flashcards for ELL students.
