Shifting School Hours
Many students and schools are now debating whether or not to start school later in the morning. Some scientists are stating that the human mind doesn’t fully function most accurately until later on in the morning or afternoon. Shifting the time of school starting will not improve the students learning abilities because most parents not be able to take their children to school due to their work and will make extracurricular activities harder to practice in the afternoon because they may need light. Many parents’ jobs doesn’t start until seven o’clock to eight o’clock in the morning which would be inconvenient for the students’ ride to get to school. “Shifting school start times to a later hour presents difficulties for parents who may no longer …show more content…
First, many sports like football, soccer, tennis, and baseball need the afternoon light for hours to practice for there games. School ending later could cause problems for some sports if some schools have a limited amount of time with lights from electricity. That would increase the amount of money used for that and can be difficult to practice in. Some parents may even not like their kids out so late for practice and want them home by a certain time. Secondly, with extracurricular activities usually ending around the time parents are getting off from work to pick their kids up instead it would be later which could result in them not being able to participate in school activities due to not having a ride home. It could also be harder to be involved in activities outside of school because of the time they get out of school when those activities could just then be starting. Many high school students have jobs to provide money for their families or themselves. If school was to start later they would not be able to get a lot of hours at work or even be able to obtain a job. Teenage life would just be all around more difficult trying to keep up with all the school work, sports, and a job on the side. Last of all is spending time with family many parents will miss that special connection to their children especially teenagers. These are the last years of their life before going off to college and they barely get to see their families. This could cause a social strain on their relationship with their family especially with everything else they may have going

One reason we should not start school later is because of the lack of time students are left with after school. Coming home to a mountain of homework is a lot of pressure, especially when you must start it late in the afternoon. Justin O’neill from Scholastic Scope article, “Should schools start later?” agrees with this. He says, “Starting school later means dismissing school later. This can interfere with bus schedules, after school activities, and family time” (20). This demonstrates that the amount of time lost in the morning adds up, and it interferes with your personal life. But that is not…

School starting early means it’s probably going to end early as well, and that leaves time for after school activities or jobs. Getting up early for school is not good for the brain, students don’t “wake up” until 10 am; that means that students probably won’t pay attention or remember what they learned before 10 am. Also, homework and other responsibilities are very time consuming, and in order to complete all the tasks you have to make time for all of it, and the later school starts the later it ends; then students won’t have time to accomplish anything. Although many of those things are time consuming it would also be a good skill to know how to manage your time well; for example if you barely have time to do homework and chores after school it might not be a good idea to join a club or do a…

For example, if school started at ten o’clock in the morning school would end at four or five P..M. If your athletics practice is usually three and a half hours you could arrive home at eight or nine P.M, and then you would need to complete the homework that was assigned to you.
