Longer Lunch Periods can be Beneficial An average day in an American high school is roughly 7 hours long with lunch averaging at about 20 minutes,while schools around the world have lunches up to 2 hours long. Students with extended lunch tend to have stronger socialization skills and less risk of health problems, than those with shorter lunch periods. Extended lunch periods can give the opportunity for an open campus that gives students a wider variety of choices. A longer lunch period in school can be beneficial to the student body as a whole by decreasing health risks, increasing academic ability, and bringing a collection of options.

Trust is a way to get the students to be involved and obey the rules of the school. It also gives a sense of independence or freedom to the student and teaches them skills on how to grow up, or preparing them to live on there own. It can also help the student self-educate by making a decision between spending money by going out to eat, or saving money and eating at home or at a friends.Going home for lunch can gain a stronger relationship with your family to form a sturdy bond. The students gain a sense of responsibility by making sure they are back on time. Also gives them time when they can schedule appointments, change their clothes or run a errand instead of missing class to take care of this. Eating at home benefits the students health. The obesity rates decline. As Stated in the article “School Lunches Linked to Kids’ Obesity” “More than one in three middle school students who regularly eat school lunches are obese or overweight” (Laino). This being because the food at school is causing higher levels of cholesterol in students, than the students that brought lunches from home. Students tend to reach for food items that are quick because of their restricted time block and long lines, instead of taking the time to make a salad at the salad bar. Students from around the world gain social skills and health benefits from the extended lunch period. Due to the shorten lunch periods in America, the students are forced to eat there lunch in a rapid manner. There can be positives and negatives to both sides of extending the open campus lunch period. One drawback is it can cause teachers to have to cut class time and extend the number of school days. The positive side of this controversy is the ability to have freedom to choose what you want to do with the time. The longer lunch periods can also strengthen students academic ability and let them thrive from the energy gained from nutrients in the food. Students need to eat properly to maintain energy levels needed for school. If the student doesn't have a long lunch period they tend to chose something quick and unhealthy.
