Should Students Replace Study Hall
Since OT has worked it’s way into our school, many have been asking: “Should we replace OT with a study hall?” This repeats what many are thinking about OT, and whether it should be replaced. OT should be switched out with a study hall to provide students with a better opportunity to learn, study, and get homework done. It would allow students extra homework time. Students could study for tests or quizzes. An opportunity to get extra help from teachers would also be available. Students could begin to enjoy reading by reading on their own without being forced to. Students who do their homework typically have higher test scores. However 11% of students simply don't have the time (Layla). The study hall would allow them to do homework and still get sleep. There are also students who may not have a way to type a paper if they need to, so they could just type it in the study hall. All these benefits would also leave students with no excuse to have incomplete …show more content…
However, some students study very little or not at all because they do not have the time. This causes grades to drop, and could cause students to resort to cheating (Denault). Study hall would give students a quiet place to get some studying done. Studying regularly allows the mind to forget less, and if students study in school they will have more time to do homework at home. Overall, in terms of studying, it is obvious that a study hall would be extremely beneficial. Many students need extra help from teachers, but do not get it. Though students can get help during lunch time, many don't want to use their only downtime, so they simply don't get much needed help. Teachers cannot always be available to help students during lunch. There are some students who don't like to ask questions in class, because they believe they might look stupid in front of their peers. This could be one of the many reasons study halls cause less failing grades

Have you ever thought that homework could be beneficial? Homework can benefit students by helping the educators with their academics. Instead, they are either playing video games or going on their phone. With a raised grade point average it should not be a problem is students are on their phones or not because they are already getting their homework done if they are able to get a 3.5 GPA. Another school offering a study hall with a 3.5 GPA or higher is Kaukauna High School(Kaukauna). In my own experience, I am a person who goes on my phone during study hall, but I find it helpful for myself to do my homework at home with limited distractions. Something I do not agree with the teachers on is where the study hall should take place because they all think it should be in an enclosed environment, but I have worked hard to be able to have my freedom and alone time from teachers in the cafeteria. One compromise could be a study hall called high honors study hall. Students involved in this are the 4.0 or higher students. These students could be able to roam the hall and go to the cafeteria during their free period(HS Study…

Some students don’t know what to do when the teacher assign their homework. They don’t know what to do because when the teachers assign them homework the night before to do, they spent all night doing it. Then the next day at school they are way too tired to process any work and lesson the teachers are teaching. They would just fall asleep and pay less attention. That causes the student to not know what to do and they just write down random answers. Then when they turn it in the teachers mark it wrong and give them a bad grade. Eventually with all these bad grades in their file it will bring their grades down a lot. This would just give more stress to the students and drain their energy. An average person should be getting about seven to eight hours of sleep a night not two or three…

my 2nd reason why we shouldn't have to do a final inside the classroom is because at home you get to brainstorm your ideas and concentrate even more. think about it. when you're at home you can pick the quietest place in the house an and just start writing your paper. you get to think about the topic and get to switch your old ideas to even better ideas. if you somehow manage to mess up on one paragraph you won't be under so much stress because you still have time to delete and come out with a different idea.…

My cooperating teacher does keep students in for lunch and recess, usually every day. For homework, she has students record in their agenda what they need to do for the night, week, or weekend. When students return the next day, the teacher checks to see if they are ready to turn in any homework that is due. If students are missing homework, she gives them a one day grace period. If a student still has not turned in homework after this one day grace period, the student is to stay in for lunch and lunch recess. She does not allow them to finish their homework during this time. Another reason she keeps students in for lunch and lunch recess, is if students have not finished classwork.…

By doing so, students would be more alert and wanting to learn, and they can become successful. An issue that comes along with changing the high school hours are the diverse amounts of after school activities. With ending school later, these activities would have to end later also. A teenager's natural sleep clock wants to go to bed later anyway, so it would not affect that teenager if he or she gets home late. For intense, a teenager who plays volleyball is used to getting out of practice at 5:30 p.m., instead she would get out at 7:30 p.m.. She would still have time to go home and do homework and other things and would not have to worry about going to bed or waking up early because of her natural sleep clock. With this not being an issue, high schools need to change their hours to being later. Most lunch lines are not the typical single file lines as illustrated in the rule book, students crowd together and this results in an invasion of personal space. It’s a constant race to get out of the classroom and into the lunchroom, students are racing down the halls to get first to lunch and to avoid the long lunch lines. For example, in the poetry collection Stampede; the cover depicts a large group of animals bolting away from a school leaving dust clouds behind them. This is akin to how students dart through the halls to get to lunch, many pushing and shoving to others to make way for themselves. In addition, some students feel uncomfortable when their personal bubble is being invaded. With all the students gathered together, it increases the chances of one another bumping into each other which in the result, causes unfair situations. A common term used by students to justify an unfair situation is “budging”.…

One could argue that a study hall would be ineffective because it would be hard to get students to actually do work and not talk and slack off. However, if study hall were structured in such a way that promotes studying, it could be possible to reduce slacking. Furthermore, even if students talk, it is still beneficial because students need a break from working constantly, because constant work can be taxing on the student’s brain, which can lead to stress, which…

Some students at EMS has financial issues that they are dealing with at home. As a result no student would be buying school lunch. Also they may have not gotten accepted to have free lunch like I do. Another reason is the student may think the lunch the lunch look or taste disgusting. So you would expect the student to not even bother with the school lunch. Others say that the reason why they don’t eat the lunch is they’re not hungry once lunch time comes. Either it was because they ate a big breakfast or they just don’t eat as much. Now think about it when they eat breakfast its probably around 7:00 or 7:30. That’s 5 hours until the next meal is offered to them, if they can do that then they must be a superhero or something.…

In class, students are learning and absorbing information, but to remember what they learned, it needs to set in, which takes time. Recess gives them a break they need to let what they learned to soak in. Recess allows them to take a break from what they just learned and went out into an environment of pure fun and relaxation. Many adults can't work for multiple hours straight so they shouldn't expect children to do the same. 6 Hour School Hours

To begin, with more time in class students have much more time in class to ask questions. In class with only having 49 minutes teachers do not have enough time in class to get through everything they need to and still answer students questions. Asking questions is a important part in the learning process and is one of the key ways to learn. Therefore a 6 hour block will improve learning. Also, a 6 hour block will improve students grades. EJMHS students do not have the best grades. In fact this year on the NWEA testing there was almost a 20 point difference in understanding reading, and reading. This is a big issue. Students need more time in class to learn more. They do not have enough time in class to learn as much as they can and sometimes they are quizzed on subjectsthey haven't learned enough of. If students are able to have more time in class students will be able to take more in during class and be able to keep up. It is also hard to keep up at the pace that some of the teachers are going at now. Sometimes students end up just writing down the shorthand of what the teacher says and they don't ask questions on what they are confused on. Students need to be able to ask questions, if teachers are going 100 miles per hour in class the students are more focused on writing down what the…
