Should wild animals be allowed to be kept as pets? After reading Wild Animals Aren’t Pets and Let People Own Exotic Animals (both by Zuzana Kukol) I think that you should not be able to own wild animals. This leads everyone to wonder: Should wild animals be allowed to be kept as pets? Wild animals are as their name says, wild. When something frightens them or they feel unsafe they will hurt, maul or even kill people. In Wild Animals Aren’t Pets they state, “In 2009, a 2-year-old Florida girl was strangled by a 12-foot-long Burmese python, a family pet that had gotten out of it’s aquarium.” (Kukol 1) As you can see wild animals are not meant to be kept in an aquarium, they are meant to be kept in the wild. When they are kept as pets this is the outcome.

Even people with good judgement and good caretaking skills are at risk. In Wild Animals Aren’t Pets they state, “We’re not suggesting that people who own these animals are cruel.” I agree with the fact that owners of these exotic pets are not bad people. However this does not mean that keeping exotic pets is right. Many people that support wild animals say that they rarely kill or maul. But are these animals really supposed to be kept in houses or cages? In Wild Animals Aren’t Pets they state, “Owners of “exotic” animals claim they rarely maim or kill. But is death rate really the point?” I do not think that death rate is the point. Animals were meant to be in the wild not sitting in a cage. Should wild animals be allowed to be kept as pets? I firmly believe that wild animals should not be kept as pets. People that own pets tend to be killed by the pets or the caretakers are killed by the pets.
