After their first encounter Romeo tries to talk to Juliet, but he is cautious of their parents feud and speaks to her from under her balcony: “But soft, what light through yonder window breaks?/ It is the east, and Juliet is the sun./ Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,/ Who is already sick and pale with grief” (2.2.1-4). Romeo uses the extended metaphor to emphasis how Juliet has broken him from his heart broken daze. When he says, “It is the east, and Juliet is the sun” he is saying that Juliet is his light. Without his light Romeo’s world would still be in darkness and chaos. Juliet is light that “through yonder window breaks” and “cures” Romeo from his depression. Romeo is misguided because they have only met once before, they know nothing about each other, yet they are confessing their love to
