The bones act as an anchor that muscles can pull in order to create movement. Where two bones meet, a joint is formed, allowing movement between the two bones.
Different types of bones
In the human body there are five different types of bone. Long Bones, Short Bones, Flat Bones, Irregular Bones and Sesamoid Bones.
Long Bones – Long Bones are hard, dense bones that provide strength, structure and mobility. An example of a long bone is the Femur (thigh bone). A long bone has a shaft and two ends. There are also bones in the fingers hat are classed as long bones that are in actual fact short in length. Short Bones – The short bones are small and many of them are found in the hands and feet. Their primary function is to provide support and stability with either little or no movement. An example of a short bone is a Carpus.
Flat Bones – Flat bones are bones whose principle function is either extensive protection or the provision of broad surfaces for muscular attachment. These bones are expanded into broad flat plates.

People usually refer to the tibia as the shinbone, and is the second largest bone in the human body.
Tarsals – The tarsals are a set of seven irregularly shaped bones. They are situated in the foot and in the ankle area.
Metatarsals – The metatarsals are used to connect the phalanges to the tarsals. They are found in the foot.
Vertebral column – The vertebral column is more commonly known as the spinal column. It's mainly used for protection of the spinal cord. It also provides stiffening for the body and attachment for the pectoral and pelvic girdles.
Cervical – The cervical is the vertebrae of the neck. The first two are known as the Atlas and the Axis. They form a pivot joint that allows both the head and the neck to move with out any difficulties. The cervical can be damaged easily because it is the smallest vertebrae in the body.
Thoracic – Similar to the cervical, the thoracic is a vertebrae. It is the vertebrae in the middle of the spine which articulate with the ribs. They are positioned in the thorax ( A structure that protects the heart and
