Sleep and School
School days should start later Many schools around the U.S start their session at between 7-8:30 AM. This is a very big issue. Most students are extremely stressed in the morning and are rushing to get to school on time. Going to school so early makes student miss out on a good breakfast. If students got more sleep, they would have a good breakfast, would have time to review their studies, and they would even be less depressed. Just changing the school time by 45 minutes would make a huge difference and solve many problems. The National Sleep Foundation (How Much Sleep Do We Really Need?”) says, “ The amount of time it takes for a student to be “fully” awake is 45 minutes after fully getting up from bed.” Some may say that if schools were to start later, students would still get to school late and there would be no difference. Students that choose to be tardy regardless of the time they are set to go are not aware of what is required either way. The majority of the students will follow the attendance rules if the school hours started later.
According to Frederick Johnson, a doctor from the National Sleep Foundation (“Teens and Sleep”), “Teenagers need between nine and 10 hours of sleep per night.” Getting up as early as six in the morning for school can leave kids with less than six hours of sleep. Waking up later will allow them to get more sleep, and be healthier. When you don’t get enough sleep, you are more likely to get sick and miss school. It also takes your body more time to recover if you do get sick when you don’t get enough sleep.
Another reason getting more sleep can make you healthier is because it can help keep your heart healthy. “Things like heart attacks and strokes are proven to be more likely to happen in the morning”, says Dr. Christopher White from the National Sleep Foundation (“Teens and Sleep”).
