Social biases are considered a problem in society due to one group looking down on another person or group because that group feels they are better than the other. The social influence that some groups have can generate common biases. Social biases can be very damaging and can hinder interaction between people (Fiske, 2010). According to Fiske (2010), “Just as aggression research reveals the basic social psychology of processes that can prove deadly, the research on bias reveals processes that are demonstrably unhealthy and sometimes deadly for both agents and targets of bias”(p.428). Bias is sometimes characterized as a specific way of thinking or viewing something. An individual’s behavior or attitude that is influenced by a particular judgment can be displayed as bias. Prejudice, Stereotyping, and Discrimination.
Stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination all are biases because treating the individual as an exact representation of the group is never the same. The individual is never identical in all respects to one’s image of the group, and no individual exactly represents in all respects the average of the group. Prejudice can be defined as reacting emotionally to an individual on the basis of one’s feeling about the group as a whole. Stereotyping is applying to an individual one’s cognitive expectancies and associations about the group. For example a drug dealer is pulled over by local police with a ton of illegal drugs. The drug dealer’s vehicle is dressed out in chrome with twenty inch rimes trimmed in white gold. A business man is also pulled over with the same style vehicle and no drugs and wonders why he is pulled over. The business man was stereotyped because his vehicle fit the description of the drug
