Social Groups In The Outsiders
In the novel The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton there are two social groups. The Socs and The Greasers. They are rival gangs. The Greasers have it worst off because they have to hideout from the police, they are poor, and they get jumped by The Socs.
The boys, Johnny and Ponyboy, have to hide from the police because Johnny killed somebody to save Ponyboy’s life. “We gotta get outta here. Get somewhere. Run away. The police’ll be here soon,” ( Hinton pg. 57). If it were The Socs that killed one of The Greasers, they could just buy their way out instead of hiding.
The Greasers are very poor in the book. “ We’re poorer than The Socs and middle class,” (Hinton pg. 3). The Socs have lots of money to just blow. The Greasers are really poor, but they’re

The Greasers Things are rough all over (The Outsiders). Based on what I read, The Greasers struggle more due to the lack of support from their parents. According to the book The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, The Greasers had more trouble than the Socs because of the sacrifices they made and the violence they were exposed to. The Socs have the wealth to have a good life but decide to make poor choices...while the Greasers make significant sacrifices. Because of the sacrifices they made and the violence they were exposed to, the “Greasers” struggled more than the “Socs”.…

There are many dividing factors in everyday life. From social classes, to political stances. I noticed the difference in their social situations. The greasers feel they have it worse than the socs, coming from broken homes with limited loved ones, aside from each other. The socs, on the other hand, seem to have been born into a silver spoon lifestyls, with luxuries that the greasers never imagined possible for themselves. While the socs may have better living situations, it is apparent to me that everyone gets dealt a bad hand in life at one point or another. The driving force of all conflict between these two parties has always been their differences, when in reality, things are "rough all…

The only reason Ponyboy got jumped was because he was a greaser, the only reason Johnny got jumped was because he was a greaser. The socs judged the greasers and thought they were something they aren’t. The Greasers misjudged the socs as well. Throughout the beginning of the movie the Greasers think that the socs are just a bunch of rich spoiled kids who get drunk and jump…

Can two drastically different groups of kids face similar problems? In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton two classes of kids, greasers and socs, share many similar problems. Greasers come from rough neighborhoods and create gangs to have a sense of belonging, socs live in wealthy neighborhoods and gang up on greasers. Although, both groups are so different they have many similar problems such as fitting in, developing romantic relationships, and getting approval from parents.…

In the 1960's there were gangs that influenced the culture in The Outsiders. They were not called Socs, nor Greasers, but they were similar to them. What gangs were like then: - Rumbles/ getting into fights - Stealing - Kidnapping - Jumping people - Carry weapons (guns, switchblades, and small knives) How gangs influence the culture: Both gangs in The Outsiders seem different which makes them split apart and fight against each other. The Socs seem like they were a high-class gang.…

S.E.Hinton says “Johnny had it awful rough at home--- it took a lot to make him cry.” on page 2 and also stated “I'll tell you something, Ponyboy, and it may come as a surprise. We have troubles you've never even heard of. You want to know something?" She looked me straight in the eye. "Things are rough all over."on page 34. This might explain why all the people that joined a gang chose to join a gang in the first place. By this we can also see that both of the gangs have trouble with their families and friends. In chapter nine of The Outsiders S.E. Hinton says “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold..." The pillow seemed to sink a little, and Johnny died.” With this we can see that change is trouble for everyone including poor and rich people. This would also show us that both people like The Greasers and like The Socs have trouble with change. In conclusion both people like Greasers and people like Socs have some of the same…

"Greasers are like hoods; we steal things and drive old souped up cars and hold up gas stations and have a gang fight once in a while." (Hinton 6) Bob Sheldon, a Soc in the novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, was stabbed and killed by greaser, Johnny Cade. The greasers are considered the menace to society, because of the way they look and the actions they make. But what if I told you the only reason why 16-year old Johnny Cade stabbed Bob was because Bob and the others Socs were drowning Ponyboy... Socs are the real menaces to society because they assault and torment, they are selfish and disguise their personality with their appearance.…

“What a lot of people don’t realize about gangs, in my opinion is that gang is not there to attack you. Eighty percent of people in a gang are there to stop anyone from attacking them. You join a gang for protection, not to go out and hit someone”- Micheal Caine. In other words, gangs are suppose to be like family, protect each and be there when they are in trouble. Although the Socials and Greasers are considered to be young teenage gangs sharing the same passion to be noticed for who they are from the inside and not the outside, they differ in terms of personalities. In the novel, The Outsiders written by S.E Hinton, two groups are introduced. These groups are the Greasers, the East-side poor kids, and the Socials, the West-side rich kids.…

    Families In The Outsiders

Because the “Greasers” and the “Socs” are byproducts of the environment they were born in and live in, they stick to together and treat each other like brothers, even though they aren't and most likely will never be related. “Or I could've gotten one of the gang to come along, one of the four boys Darry and Sosa and I have grown up with and consider family. We're almost as close as brothers; when you grow up in a tight-knit neighborhood like ours you get to know each other real well.” (3, Hinton) In almost every major event in the story, one of the boys is there for either Ponyboy or Johnny. When Johnny died, each and every single one of the group mourned his death. It hit some especially hard, like Ponyboy and Dally, where Ponyboy pretends that he was the one that killed Bobby, just so he doesn't have to face the fact that Johnny died. Dally just completely broke, to the point where he wanted to die, because Johnny was the last thing that Dally loved in this world. The same goes for the “Socs”. While we don't really know the “Socs” side of the story, the author still gives us some information about what happened to the “Socs” when Bobby was murdered. Randy, One of Bobby’s best friends, wanted to stop fighting completely after his best friend was killed. Because of Bobby’s death, Randy finally realized that no matter what the “Greasers” do, whether they win or not, they will always be at the bottom, and the “Socs” will always be the ones with the lucky breaks. In the Outsiders, the “Greasers and the “Socs” show that in a world that spits out people who are the aftermath of the corrupt environment, in a world that family can mean nothing, people that share the same ideals, the same past, same future, will stay together, blood related or not. “Byrdes of on kynde and color flok and flye allwayes together.” -William Turner, The Rescuing of Romish…

The town dislikes both gangs, but in particular the greasers. The greasers are disliked much more than the socs because they are poor and dirty. Even though the socs are in fact even more ruthless than the greasers, they are "socially acceptable" due to their appearance and money. One night the socs make a surprise attack on Ponyboy and his Johnny, and in self-defense Johnny kills a soc. They run to a close friends (Dallas) house. Dallas gives them some money and tells them to go to an abandoned church out of town. So they spend a couple nights there. One day after going out to buy groceries they return to the church to see that it is on fire. Ponyboy and Johnny went in to save the children from the burning church. Johnny is trapped inside. Dallas goes into save him. Then, the church collapses. They are rushed to the hospital. Ponyboy and Dallas are okay, but Johnny is severely injured. Ponyboy talks with one of the Socs and they both discuss about how they are tired of fighting. Everyone should be equal . Later, the Greasers and Socs get into an enormous brawl , but in the end the Greasers win.…
