Social Media Is Being Weaponized Summary
‘’Social Media is being Weaponized’’ by Emerson Brooking is a valid source. Emerson Brooking is a Washington, DC-based writer. His research focuses on emerging trends in conflict. Brooking was a student of the international security policy who grew up in the mountains of North Georgia. He obtains a BA in Political Science and Classical studies. Brooking uses factual information to offer current articles which he expresses thoroughly. He also has 13 years of experience. This article sponsored by the Atlantic Media Company, which is a website that comprehensively describes social media events for researchers and common citizens. This source is trustworthy. Brooking’s main point in this article is that duality of human nature is readily …show more content…
Brooking has published several reports, but in this article, he aimed his readers to enjoy life more and stop the use of social media. The author uses logical appeals and succeeds in conveying understandable information he needed to. However, Brooking is not a professional author; and could consider making the quality of his points more balanced. He did a phenomenal job with being through with information by not leaving anything out and was professional by not being biased. His article on social media is well-organized and suggests that ‘’individuals are more well-rounded without social media’’ (par.13). In researching the problems of social media usage, I looked for reports that included the social impact social media held by Americans. One way Brooking’s article supported my topic is by included information about how people can take steps to not use social media so much every day. By simply interacting with others and staying busy one can avoid spending an hour or more on social media. I believe I can use this source to project my topic better in my argumentative essay. From reading this article it has taught me about different associated problems with social media. I recommend ‘’Social Media is being Weaponized’’ to anyone who loves to spend more than an hour a day on

Chapter 13 of They Say I Say by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein analyze the ongoing, controversial topic of social media/ technology. The authors organize both sides of the topic by going back and forth and giving different view points. The two sides of the argument are one, that technology and social media "fries our brain" and makes person to person communication more of a problem than what it used to be. On side two, we hear that technology actually brings us together and gives us immense amounts of information that we never had access to before. "You may have heard parents and journalists complain that smartphones, iPads, and other electronic devices that seem almost wired into our brains are destroying our ability to think, communicate,…

Though an extremely new medium, social media has seemed to completely alter the way Americans think, especially among the Millennial generation. It is another perfect example of how our lack of sense and reason has transformed something that was designed to increase our social capabilities into a way to rant, boast, and bully. Instead of using social media to communicate and connect positively, our society has used it to create countless issues and distractions that only deter and detract from developing our social…

Quite simply, it can either “build you up or break you down”; and only those that knowingly can utilize its services in a skillful manner are the ones able to succeed.…

Since 1997, people have been using social media, however, it became a trend around 2003 to 2005. Nowadays, different forms of social media are incorporated into the millennial generation and their lives are preoccupied with it. In Peggy Orenstein’s “The Way We Live Now: I Tweet, Therefore I Am,” she asserts social media has overtaken people’s lives through personal and social reality. Orenstein speculates social media wastes people’s time, causes people to be unable to identify between their personal and private lives, and ruins relationships.…

Social media is not sabotaging communication. Susan Tardanico, CEO of one of the largest independent leadership development firms in the world, states that social media increases the potentials of misinterpretation. She states “people often do not take the time to consider the nuances of their writing,” and that “conflicts explode over a tone of an email.” (“Is Social Media Sabotaging Communication?” 2012) Well, people often do not consider what they are saying before they speak it, and conflicts happen every day over misinterpretations. Whether it be on the phone, face to face, or over social media, unfortunately human beings are always going to be misunderstood every once in a while or not see eye to eye. The means of communication is not the issue; it is that people do not express themselves in a clear and concise way. Another side to the argument against social media would be that social media has aided the spread of false and unreliable information. In 2013, the World Economic Forum released…

In an age where information and interactions are just a few clicks away, it has become easy to blame social media sites for problems in society. There are some who oppose this idea and others who are on board with the notion. Social media can have both a positive and negative effect on today’s society; it is up to the individual to decide the effect on them.…

Find me on Twitter, Facebook, and even MySpace, because we are here to change the world so “follow” me. I have read the writings of Malcolm Gladwell and Dennis Baron to analyze and write about. They have both presented different points and ideas on the significance of social media and how it has affected our world past and present. Gladwell’s essay, “Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted” is focused on the sit-in of 1960, an event started by four African American college students who went to a local diner for service, but were denied because of their race. This turned into a historic protest, stretching across the Deep South from North Carolina to as far as Texas, involving as many as 600 other protesters in a time when there was no internet or social media; not including the amount of police force and other organizations called in to try and stop the whole thing. He also feels that social media is not associated with strong activism such as this. While Dennis Baron’s story, “Reforming Egypt in 140 Characters?” is focused on the uprisings in the Middle East and how natives have organized and used social media and other lines of communication to spread their views to overthrow political powers. Although that is true he also points out that the government can manipulate the sites by putting up firewalls, and filtering the news that is spread; thus making it hard for social media to make a hug impact on revolutions that take place. Although Gladwell and Baron both address the role social media may or may not play in activism with a well-thought- out argument, I find Baron’s argument most persuasive because he presents current facts about how the Twitter Revolution was credited with fostering the ousting of former Middle Eastern presidents and the support it has provided for other protest over the last year. I am also living in a technology driven…

Historically, it has become clear that while several news sources, primarily Overcast, have improved the conditions of the ailing internet, the time before Zephyr’s installment was riddled with controversy, argument, and negativity. However buried the history of media activity may be, today’s events have required the dredging up of past violence to better understand the significance behind the vicious act. Websites including “social media” platforms labeled names such as Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook, contain records of bitter humiliation, heated disagreements, and intense hatred. As their popularity grew at the beginning of the twenty first century, people became desensitized to the humanity of others, which led to widespread hostility online. Soon after, crippling negativity and uproar stemming from disagreement controlled websites such as these, where enjoyment could no longer be garnered. While Zephyr has clearly aided the world in rescuing them from this universe by creating an entirely non-biased platform, removed from the negativity of social media, rebellions have begun. People holding deep-seated anger wish to bring back this desolate war zone of human affairs, destroying the peaceful, intimate environment citizens currently…

The general topic of my PIP is the younger generation’s (specifically Gen Y and Z - the digital natives) inherent captivation with social media and the moral and social quandary this poses. The benefit of social media is ambiguous to say the least; does it serve as a tool to better network with the world around you? Or are its effects much more negative in nature? Accordingly, my hypothesis in relation to my topic is that “Social media isolates individuals (with focus given to the digital natives) by negatively socialising them with subpar social abilities”. I aim to achieve a concrete conclusion on whether or not my hypothesis is accurate, and how and why the networking giant Facebook has undoubtedly changed the socialisation process for present and future generations. Specific areas to be investigated are the continuities or changes to social interaction between individuals, as well as the socialisation process and any variances to the process that may surface due to gender (my cross cultural element). This topic was developed from a genuine interest in the enculturation of individuals into contemporary Western society, and how this may differ negatively compared to more traditional methods of socialising with others, apparent in the previous pre-Facebook generations. To compliment my secondary research for this topic, I will conduct further primary research consisting of a questionnaire to formulate a basis for public opinion, a focus group consisting of 3 males and 3 females from Gen Y or Z, interviews aimed towards those of older generations, and finally, my own personal reflection to act as a cross reference to what others have said from Gen X or Y.…

“Americans aged 18-64 who use social networks say they spend an average of 3.2 hours per day doing so, according to new research released by Ipsos Open Thinking Exchange (OTX).” 3.2 hours is more than one may think. Social media does nothing but help people become “social”. Sure, any person can catch up on the latest drama, find out who just announced their pregnant, or wish their great great great grandma happy birthday, but in reality social media is a waste of time to everyone in the world. And the addiction is hard to overcome once a person has started. Almost 1,200 hours on a social networking website is a lot of time someone could be using more wisely yet no one seems to try to change this hair-raising…

In todays society it seems as if everybody is connected to social media somehow, especially us college students and young adults. It’s a way for us to connect with friends far away or even nearby. The thing is, social media is destroying young adults mentally and physically because it’s disconnecting them from the physical world. Texting, emailing, tweeting, and facebooking have become the preferred forms of communication for many young adults in the past 10 years and shows no signs of slowing down. We’re now in a society where interacting online has become the social norm. You’re probably more likely to speak to friends and family through electronic devices…

Have you ever thought that social media could support the protesters? Do you think the protesters should use violence or nonviolence to achieve their goals? How would you react if you were in their position? Well, most of people when they protest, they use nonviolence to get what they want because they think that nonviolence is more useful than violence (Solomon, 2014). In fact, there are a group of people called “The dream defenders” protest in front of the police because they are suffering from the discrimination between white and black people and injustice between them, so they use nonviolence to get ride of police violence and change the laws in Florida. The social media affect the protesters somehow when they protest (Solomon, 2014). This…
