Being an immigrant helps me remember that I have to do good for me and for my family. My mom is a single mother and raised my two sisters and I while my dad lived in the Dominican Republic. I guess you can say that the strength for her is being a single mother is motivating her to do everything that is possible to give us what we need. I appreciate my mom a lot because it takes a lot of courage to do everything on your own when everybody is not helping you enough. Growing up was hard because I did not get to have everything others kids had back when I was in middle school and in High School. I always had to translate for my mom everywhere we went and till this day she still need to get things translated. I believe that these strengths contributed to my preparation of becoming a social worker because it helped me look past everything and realized that others might feel the same way I did through out the years of living in New York. I remember one time when my mom, my sisters and I had to evacuate the building because there was a fire on top of us. We were homeless for 6 months. There I realized that more people need to be helped because there is not enough courage to stand up for whats right. People learn from the world around them and I want to be able to set a better example for the children of
