your talents. I feel by creating uplifting visuals would keep people in a more cheerful manner. Sociology is going to play a large factor in my life in the future on all levels.
The Digital Media field consists of advertising and promoting through sound and video. I mean just think about all the things you see on television. Now days, when I look at television I see a lot of different stereotypes, especially when you turn on the news. The News Media is supposed to inform the people on what is going on around their town whether it is positive or negative. However, people do not always want to only see positivity because that gets boring. Personally, I think that the News Media puts an emphasis on the negative news that happens around towns. I feel that is one of the main reasons negative stereotypes get started. When it comes to criminals on the news, what is your instant image when you hear the word Criminal? Most people would probably say black males. There is an article that states, “In the United States, widespread stereotypes exist among whites that black men are threatening, violent, and criminal (Collins 2004) (Pedulla D.S. 2014).” I myself am a black man and it hurts when people can have a prejudgment of you just because of negative
stereotype. Just because you fit the description does not mean you are that person. Now people get this conclusion because that is all that is shown on the news in big cities. Black people being violent and committing crimes is all you see. I feel if the media did not put such an emphasis on that, the stereotype would not be as bad as it is. If I were over the News media, I would conduct those types of stories differently. If the full story was not given right away, I would not talk about it right away. I might just have the story be a minor topic of the news without a lot of emphasis. I also think crimes have different levels of punishment so all crimes that appear on the news shall not receive the same type of emphasis.
The film industry is another complicated career that sociological aspects affect. Everybody loves to watch movies; however, there is nothing more annoying than a boring movie. When you think about your ideal movies you love to go watch, do you ever notice any Christian aspects in the movie? I know most of the movies I love to watch show little to no Christianity in their films. The reason for that is because Christian films are typically boring to most viewers. When people go out to the movies, they do not want to feel educated, they want to be entertained. Dallas Jenkins who is an Evangelical movie reviewer stated, “Message films are rarely exciting. So by their very nature, most Christian films aren’t going to be very good because they have to fall within certain message-based parameters. And because the Christian audience is so glad to get a “safe, redeeming, faith-based message,” even at the expense of great art, they don’t demand higher artistic standards (Cottrell).” I would agree with this statement. I do not know too many message films that are exciting or entertaining. I can only think of one person who successfully made entertaining films that also contained Christian aspects in them. Tyler Perry is American actor and screenwriter. He has made a good handful of movies that all had a great story line. The first one that pops into my mind is his film Madea’s Family Reunion. The movie consisted of your typical family reunion in the summer and family values which included Christianity.
There is a dilemma within the field of film and media. The field gives off all types of views and perceptions that can harm or benefit you as a person. Men vs. Women are always a popular subject to debate about. However, when mass media gives you two totally different perceptions for the two, it creates a problem. John Macionis states, “The messages we get from mass media sources not only tell us about sexuality but also tell us what sort of people we ought to be (Macionis. P.193).” When media does this they are endorsing heterosexuality. The women are portrayed as vulnerable and eye catching to a man, while the men are portrayed as dominant and masculine.
What can I do to be the difference in my career field? Honestly, I do not the answer just yet. Providing a Christian sociological perspective is something that needs to be done in my career but it is a big risk factor that can make you or break you. As a society today the world is really confused about their morals. I mean do not get me wrong, I know there are strong Christians out there who are very strong in the faith with Jesus, but I do not think it is something that they visually want to see all the time. Sociology plays a big part in my future, making the difference in God’s image is something I am still learning how to do.
