softball
Softball is a variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. It was invented in 1887 in Chicago as an indoor game. It was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground, softbund ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies' baseball. The name softball was given to the game in 1926. A tournament (1933) at the Chicago World's Fair spurred interest in the game. The Amateur Softball Association of America (founded 1933) governs the game in the United States and sponsors annual sectional and World Series championships. The International Softball Federation regulates rules of play in more than 110 countries, including the United States and Canada. Women's fast-pitch softball became an Olympic sport in 1996, but it (and baseball) was dropped in 2005 from the 2012 games. Despite the name, the ball used is not soft. It is about 12 in. (30 cm) in circumference (sometimes larger for slow-pitch), which is 3 in. (8 cm) larger than a baseball. The infield in softball is smaller than in baseball; each base is 60 ft (18 m) from the next, as opposed to baseball's 90 ft. (27 m). Softball rules vary somewhat from those o

The first references of the game started back in the eighteenth century. Many games like “rounders” and “cricket” were some of the games that influenced baseball. Furthermore, in September of 1845, a group of men founded the New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club. One of the founders, Alexander Joy Cartwright, established a new set of rules that would later shape the game into the modern day version. He set rules like, having a diamond-shaped infield, foul lines, and the notorious “3 strikes and you’re out.” Also while making new rules he eliminated some too. Cartwright made the game safer by eliminating rules like tagging a runner by throwing the ball at them. These changes made the game safer, but also made it faster paced and more challenging.…

Baseball and softball are alike in so many ways. So I will just give you a few examples. One example is that in softball and baseball each team has 9 players. These sports both have the same positions. A second example is that the bat length is about the same, the weight is not the same simply because girls just aren’t as strong as guys are. The bats length is usually around 31-34 inches. Then the last example is that each team…

America’s pastime and the tailed off version. The similarities and differences between baseball and softball. Baseball and softball are different and similar, the most obvious ones to the common eye are baseball fields are much larger and have a minimum of 300 feet and the players pitch overhand while in softball the field is a minimum of 200 feet and the players pitch underhand. The similarities entail the general concept of the game like “three strikes you’re out” and also while hitting the players both want to make contact with the ball and the bat the exact same way because they both want a nice level line drive rather than a pop-up.…

When it comes to pitching in softball and baseball you will be able to spot the difference right away. Pitchers in baseball throw the baseball over hand while softball players throw the softball underhand. Since softball players throw softballs underhand there is a difference in the pitching rules of baseball and softball. Softball players do not a have a regulation on how many innings they can throw, while baseball players have a limit of how many innings they are allowed to throw. This rule was established because throwing overhand takes a huge toll on the arm, while throwing underhand is more of a natural motion. The similarity between these two sports is the way pitches are called, balls and strikes, and hits and walks determine both sports and the outcome in the end.…

The first record of baseball in the United States began in Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1791. Its popularity spread quickly through the town and the men were banned the playing the sport within 80 yards of the town meeting house. Another early mentioning of baseball was in New York. Referred to as “base ball”, it was regularly played on Saturday’s on the outskirts of New York in 1823; which is now known as Greenwich Village. At the same time, cricket was also a popular sport. Baseball and cricket jockeyed back and forth for popularity with baseball eventually winning over the crowd. A team called the New York Knickerbockers was founded in 1845. This was first baseball team to play under modern rules. These rules were likewise adopted and accepted by other teams. As baseball changed over time so did the rules. They eventually evolved into the rules that we now abide by in modern day baseball.…
