Spanish Speaking at Work

The ability to communicate generation to generation is crucial in the restaurant industry is crucial. I have spent many years in restaurant operations and I have never been in an establishment that where English was only spoken. Most kitchens in southern California speak Spanish. Being able to communicate with your kitchen staff is very important. Being fluent in English and Spanish will help you become more successful in the restaurant industry. The older generation from Mexico tends to not know English very well. The younger generation does. My experience is purely just in the front of the house. English is always primarily spoken in southern California with front of the house operations. Spanish seems to be dominant in the kitchens. I’ve been in some establishments where it was hard to communicate because of the language barrier, which I believe in unfortunate because we live in a English speaking country. But that’s just the way it has to be sometimes. Proper communication between front and back of the house employees is crucial when running a well functioning dinning establishment. In today’s kitchens, especially in Southern California, the ability to speak fluent English as well as Spanish is needed. The key to success is the ability to use the right tools to get the job done correctly. People sometimes take advantage of language and do not realize how important it is to our every day life.

Today’s society in America is nothing like it has been before. We speak a variety of languages. Our foreign elderly almost always seem to have a hard time with English compared to the younger generation. Which for most is expected. They may have lived many years in their homeland before coming to America. That being said, it makes it very difficult in working situations to communicate with an older generation.
