Concept 1: Identify the general goal
Definition: The general goal of a speech is the overall intent of a speech.

Example: When Gloria says, “It makes the point I want to make—if people are creative and have a strong work ethic, they can make it big,” this is an example of having a general goal. Gloria’s general goal is to let the audience know that if they work hard, they can achieve anything.
Concept 2: Secondary Research
Definition: the process of locating information about a topic that was discovered by other people.

Example: When Gloria said she did not pay attention to Mary Kay Ash’s poor experience with school because the material did not focus on that part of her life, secondary research would be necessary to discover why she did so poorly in school.
Concept 3: Determining Main Points
Definition: The main point of a speech consists of 2-5 central ideas that are to be presented in a speech using complete sentences.

Concept 4: Listener Relevance
