Session review
For this assignment I had to plan a sports coaching session, team sport which was basketball. I started by making sure everyone one of my participants were health and safe to take part in the session, so I went through a risk assessment check then done a simple and successful warm up to get them used to the ball and sport. For my participants to understand I made sure I communicated loudly and clear, and if I saw someone finding someone thing difficult I would talk to them individual, which made the whole session successfully because understood and it went to plan.
I used the coaching formula to also make sure I picked out on any mistakes and areas of improvement for all participants for example
Stop …show more content…
- this is when you see the participants do a skill/play incorrectly and you stop the whole group in order to show them the correct technique.
Show - this part of the formula is when you break down the technique of the skill to the group so it is done correctly next time.
Rehearse - this is the third stage of the formula and it is when you let the group go over what you have just explained a few times to make sure that they have understood the fundamentals of what you want them to do
Play - after they have rehearsed the skill/play you let them go live to see if they have understood and have taken on board the type of skill you want the group to perform. If they have not understood the play at any stage of the formula you do not move on until they do
Coaching points
As the session went on I introduced the group to the session aims and objectives of the session which were mainly to be able to perform the basic chest pass and bounce pass as well as change of direction whilst in match. In order to achieve this I broke it down into different sections of the session which go as follows:
Technique:. Hold the ball in the triple-threat position.
-Aim for a spot three-quarters of the way between you and your teammate.
-Pass the ball underneath opponent’s outstretched arms
Hold your ball close to your chest.
- Spread your fingers around the ball.
- It is better to make a triple-threat position
- Take a step forward while releasing the ball.
- Push off your back foot.- Extends your arms to help you pass the ball to your team mates
Skill: this stage of the session I progressed the passes by putting them in game situations with pressure and main aim after completing the passes
Development: at this stage of the session I put it into a match situation in which they had to play against each other.
Every team member had to have a pass the ball 5 times before they could shoot .
Fitness: the fitness part of the session was done generally as they had to do running in all parts of the session
As the session was completed I gathered the participants together to have a debrief on the session and see if they had learnt anything from the session. As well as the feedback from the participants I had feedback from the assessor.
Strengths
The feedback states the session states that i met my objectives as the participants achieved the basic passing of the basketball.
It was planned well and according to the participant’s skill level which means it was not too hard and it was achievable for them.
The targets that were set were met.
The organisation and use of equipment during the session was good as i used different equipment and a good size of the working area.
Used advanced participants for some of the demonstrations to show that it is achievable.
Areas of
improvement
Could have progressed a little bit more than just doing a game situiaton but putting pressure on the pass or time limit
I didn’t encourage/praise the participants as much as I could have done.
Missed out some individual errors in which I could have helped some of the participants individually.
Overall I think I had a mixture of coaching styles as I used a democratic and autocratic approach to the coaching. This is because I discussed some key coaching points and how to pass the ball before I told them what I required them what I wanted them to do.
Session evaluation
Overall I think that my session went well but I have looked at some points of my coaching to see if I can improve on any areas to inform that participants get the best out of the session. I could have made my session more fun; because it was not as fun it was more basic and plain. I also thought instead of jumping straight to game situation I could have progressed it by putting pressure or get them used to what to expect in game situating in pairs .Another thing I could have done better was encourage the participants more during the session. This will give them the confidence to do the practised skill to a better level and give them the confidence to do it more consistently. Next time during the sessions if I spot someone doing something correctly or if they have improved on their previous technique I should start using more encouraging words for example if I see someone doing a better dribble than what they did before I would say, “well done keep it up and you will improve as a player”.
Sometimes my positioning on the court was not as good as it could have been which means I missed some of the individual errors that occurred. This could mean that participants could stay at the same level as they were before without progression because of me missing the mistakes they make. I could improve on this by standing at a place where I can see the whole group perform the skill and if I see a participant using the incorrect technique I could go and work with them individually whilst everyone carries on or stop the group and someone else to demonstrate the skill to try and give the participant a better understanding of what they should do
