While attending Lewis & Clark College I will foster my passion for nature, environmental advocacy, and politics. Participating in things like the Environmental Living Learning Community will provide an engaging and enriching space to form long-lasting connections with people who share the same desire to promote environmental sustainability. Portland and the beautifully wooded campus at Lewis & Clark provide the type of natural environment that inspires my initiative for environmental advocacy. I look forward to exploring the opportunities near and within Portland, including the many hiking trails. The outdoors have been an important part of my life since childhood. Looking back, some of my happiest memories are from visiting National Parks,…
While growing up in the inner city, it seemed like every day was a fight for survival. It is difficult for me to recall any happy memories; however if I have learned one thing while being on the streets of Paterson, New Jersey, it is that friendship is essential to the soul. It is sad to see my brothers and sisters being killed in the streets over ignorance and smart minded people wasting their talent and succumbed to the drug infested streets. Being alone, it hard to change mindsets of others; however being in a group with such strong role models and caring for life are an unbelievable sight. I want to be part of Omega Psi Phi because I want to be a role model to children who no matter what their living conditions consist of, they are able…
The National Honor Society is an outstanding organization that lets students make an impact for communities worldwide. I am honored to be chosen as a candidate for the National Honor Society along with my intellectual peers. Being a member of this society will open countless opportunities for me. If I get inducted in this society, my high school dream will come true. I will not only grow as a person but I will get to support others and serve the community.…
I would love to be in the National Honor Society, I was a part of the National Junior Honor Society at Sawtooth Middle School and I enjoyed it very much. I had so much fun being apart of the NJHS and that group of people. I love being apart of my community and being able to take action. One reason you should consider me for NHS is volunteering is a big part of my life already. I volunteer at Meridian Elementary and at the Boise Humane Society. At Meridian Elementary I help in the library with the classes and book fairs. I walk and play with the dogs at the Boise Humane Society with my friends. I am also in the Upward Bound program where we volunteer at the Boise Food Bank and the Boise Rescue Mission. I work extremely hard to keep my GPA up…
I am honored to be among all of the exemplary students who are being considered for the National Honor Society. This is an organization I have looked forward to being in since the beginning of my high schools career. After researching the National Honor Society I have found that they recognize students who show outstanding qualities of leadership, scholarship, character and service. I am also apart of other organizations, FFA, Interact, Praise Band, and Church Youth Group, that I work very hard in to grow in these qualities.…
The opportunity to become a member of the National Honor Society (NHS) is an extreme honor. I realize that my academic success is just the initial requirement for becoming a member. In addition to strong academics and a commitment to learning, the NHS also requires service, leadership, and character to recognize individuals that are actively contributing to both school and the community. I am not only proud of my accomplishments in all four of these pillars, but also by the positive contributions I have made to my school and the community at large. Maintaining a cumulative 4.0 grade point average through the most recently completed semester is the result of a strong work ethic and a dedicated effort to strive for academic excellence.…
With a wide spread of my arms and a clench of my fist, the last notes of Panic! at the Disco's song, "Victorious" came to an end. As I called the band to attention and to march off the football field, I knew the marching season for the Mead High School Marching Band was coming to an end after another year. I remember feeling jittery and excited despite the fact that I was composed before our eight minute marching show began. I hopped off of my podium, used my shaky hands to disassemble the platform, and exited the field to catch up with the band. Our performance at the St Vrain School District Band Night marked the end to my high school marching band career that started just four years prior.…
I would not only like to, but be considered for membership within the NEHS, NMHS, and SMHS because it would make my parents and family proud. I also want to be a good role model for my sisters, who are just now entering their journey in their education. Especially for my younger sister, who is in 6th grade and in 2 years will enter high school. It would be an honor to be a member of the Honor Societies to make my parents proud and be an example/role model to my sisters. My parents made many sacrifices to get me and my sisters a better education then they did. I come from Mexico and my parents didn't have the same opportunities for education like I have right now and I have to thank them because they left their families to come to an unknown place with an unknown language just so I could study and have a better life then they did.…
The marching band is still a musical representation of the institution that the ensemble is located. The marching band serves as a large recruitment tool and an essential public relations vehicle for music departments all over (Cumberledge). Therefore, musicianship should not change nor diminish because of the type of ensemble. It’s been said that the earliest marching bands were the forerunners of today’s symphony orchestras, concert bands, and instrumental chamber music, as well as the modern marching band (Madsen, 2007, 54). The first marching bands have military origins with the sole purpose of achieving excellence and competing at extraordinary high levels of marching precision and musicianship (55). Therefore, the type of students you recruit is determined by type of ensemble you have. This is very prevalent at many HBCU band programs. The ensemble has its own character. Does the character of the ensemble promote the best in music? Does the character of the band promote academic…
In addition to playing in my high school's marching band, I played in concert band until I left for C-Tec. I wanted to continue on playing clarinet during the winter months in a group ensemble. I actually found that I enjoy playing in concert band, much more than marching band because of the greater opportunity for advancement. Through the process of auditioning, I have improved my range in addition to improving my technical musical ability. Through participating in concert band I discovered that I greatly enjoy playing classical style music in addition to movie music themes. Due to my past experiences in concert band I have decided to continue playing in a concert style band once I attend…
Marching band is my life, or at the very least, it's the majority of my free time. In marching band, we have been trying to push ourselves physically to be in shape for this competitive season. We run laps every practice, rotate between different muscular exercises, and practice breathing fully – which is harder than it seems. At the beginning of the season, I began to struggle by about halfway into the first lap. I'd become light-headed a few sets into breathing exercises. I couldn't seem to keep up with the bar that was being set for us, however; I continued to push myself to – and occasionally beyond – my breaking point. After every practice, I was sore and exhausted, then it suddenly started getting easier. I’m now able to jog nearly two…
Growing up, I was always an outgoing child, but I never liked being the center of attention. I’ve always had a passion for music, and in the sixth grade, I started taking voice and piano lessons. Once I made it to high school, I was certain that I wanted a career in music. I convinced myself that music is what I was destined to do. During my junior year, I stumbled upon music therapy, which was a great combination of my two favorite things—music and helping others— and ultimately decided to apply for Belmont. The first few months of classes were great; I was even more in love with music therapy and how it can change peoples’ lives. However, at the end of second semester, I had a change of heart and mind. I realized that even though I have always loved music, maybe I could make a difference in people’s lives without using music.…
Ten minutes is all they get. Ten minutes of nearly constant simultaneous movement and playing; along with being aware of each step and how it's taken, where is taken, and how big it is taken. Awareness of positioning, posture, drum major, spacing, tempo, guiding, and each other. In ten minutes everyone in the stand will see what people spent hours going over; running and rerunning it again. If someone second guesses, messes up, goes out of tune or steps wrong, they don’t get another quarter or another inning to redeem themselves. All they have are those ten minutes from when they are called to attention to when they march off the field.…
4. In my short life I have gone through many struggles. As a child my family life was not always great, and I have had to deal with poverty and hard times throughout my life, even now. But, there have always been people there to help me through those times, and that is what I want to do with my life. I am passionate about serving my community and giving back. I know how hard life can get when you are not living in the best conditions and in constant stress. Having to grow up too fast can be difficult, and I want to help kids like me and others struggling, through this process. I want to be able to provide as much support and maybe even guidance, as much as I possibly can. I’m proud of my roots and where I came from and I’m glad they made me…
I have always had some fascination for mathematics and the essential sciences. However, more than ever before, I have become more curious about what the sciences could offer. Accordingly, it was with fascination and curiosity that I chose a career in Chemical Engineering. Having thus obtained a first class grade in Chemical Engineering from the prestigious University of Lagos, Nigeria, I now appreciate the words of Albert Einstein: “the important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing!” I seek, not just to continue questioning, but practical solutions to problems affecting my society as a way of making my contribution to the human and technological advancement of my country, Nigeria.…
