Topic: Allowing Stem Cell Research

Specific Purpose: To persuade people who are against stem cell research to see the

good in it.

Intended Audiences: People against stem cell research.

Thesis Statement: Stem cell research may lead to the cure to all sorts of diseases,

including diabetes, cancer, and many others.

Introduction

Attention/Grabber/Credibility Material: Are you someone who suffers from a

life threatening disease like cancer? If not, do you know someone who had or still has it? What if you, or someone close to you, could be cured from their life threatening disease forever?

Tie to intended audience: Would you want a cure to be discovered or do you

want to take a chance with your life or someone else's by not doing anything? People, if you do not help and support this issue many people could die.

Thesis: Stem cell research may be the cure to deadly diseases that you or a

close friend may have, or even your pet can be saved by stem cell research.

Transition: Let me show you some ways that stem cell research can be helpful and

why it should stay legal.

Body:

Supporting Point 1: Stem cell research would lower your insurance bill

substantially. In 1999, the civilian non-institutionalized population had health care expenses of $596 billion. 5% of the community population accounted for slightly more than half of the population's total health expenses. This 5% mainly consisted of people with serious diseases who needed items so they would not die, such as insulin for diabetics. More than 75% of diabetic supplies are covered by insurance. If diabetes was cured then there would not be a need for such high insurance bills.

Supporting Point 2: Stem cell research offers the hope of a cure for thousands

of type 1 diabetes sufferers in the U.S. Also known as juvenile diabetes, type 1 diabetes is the most critical form of diabetes. Before it eventually kills those who suffer from it, type 1 diabetes takes a serious toll on the body. Among other things, it can lead to blindness, kidney failure, amputation, and stroke.

Supporting Point 3: Stem cell research can save dying animals. Results from

an animal study conducted at Johns Hopkins show that stem cell therapy can be used effectively to treat heart attacks, or myocardial infarcts, in pigs. Stem cells taken from another pig's bone marrow, when injected into the animal's damaged heart, were able to restore the heart's function to its original condition. Animals can greatly benefit from stem cell research.

Transition: So now you see why stem cell research can be good and should be kept

legal.

Conclusion:

Summary: Stem cell research helps with many different things ranging from

curing diabetes to saving a pig that has heart problems. It can save lots of the insurance money that comes from people such as yourselves. Stem cell research should never be banned for it can save millions of people with simple cells from places that do not harm any living things. Diabetes and cancer and other diseases can be degrading and hard on the body and stem cell research provides a solution to all these problems.

Tie back to audience: We all must join together and keep stem cell research

legal so that diseases will be no more!

Concluding remarks: In conclusion, I urge you to stand with me to keep the

research going so that all people alike can have a better life with no worrying about friends and family having diseases like cancer and diabetes anymore.

Some of these are more successful and widely known, but one of the more controversial is stem cell research. In the article "Embryonic Stem Cell Fairy Tales", Jean Swenson attempts to educate the public on why she believes many are prone to believing that embryonic stem cells (which have not been successfully used on humans) are the cure to many fatal diseases and illnesses. She goes on to argue that this is an idealist's belief and not a valid way to cure any ailments, and suggests that adult stem cells and cord blood cells are a much more valid treatment.
