That being said, depending on the time of the day and location of a student’s class, food choices are often limited.
DeSales is in need of something new and we have it for you. Street-Eats is an on-campus food truck intended to satisfy all student, faculty, staff, and any guests of DeSales University’s needs.
Our hours of operation will oppose the already existing dining options’ hours of operation. Since breakfast is the one thing consistently available on campus, we have decided our food truck will not need to be available for breakfast hours. Street-Eats’ hours of operation are as follows:
Sunday-Thursday:
12:00pm-2:00am
Friday-Saturday: 12:00pm – 4:00am
Our food truck will offer a variation of food choices daily in order to keep customers coming back. Ultimately, our goal is to increase convenience. A college campus is extremely busy and at times, a stressful environment. Often, students are going throughout the entire duration of the day without breaks. Between classes, work, rehearsals, practices, etc.; it is often difficult to find time for a meal. For some, eating starts to get pushed aside on the list of priorities because there is no time left to consult the hours of operation and walk to one of the school’s dining choices. Street-Eats offers a quick and simple way to make sure students are able to eat and still make it to their classes and outside obligations on time. Street-Eats will offer day to day food options as well as “day specific” menu items, for example: Wing Wednesdays. Street-Eats will provide a menu specific to it with dining options not available elsewhere on campus. We plan to create our own identity different from anything already offered at DeSales University.
Street eats will maintain a captive audience because we offer food that is fulfilling while maintaining convenience: good food on the go. While it can be argued that all dining services on campus offer “good” food; no dining option is completely convenient for the average class, work, and extracurricular activity filled schedule. This is not solely true for DeSales University’s campus. Convenience is a priority in today's society, no matter the setting. People often not only prefer, but expect immediate satisfaction. We plan to provide satisfaction across the Lehigh Valley community.
We are looking to begin our business with DeSales University; however, we are hoping to expand within the near future and provide our services throughout the LVAIC community which includes: DeSales University, Lehigh University, Moravian College, Lafayette College, Muhlenberg College, and Cedar Crest College. Outside of University/College specific locations, within the next five years, we plan to grow even more and have our food truck present at local events including, but not limited to: Musikfest, Lehigh Valley Food Truck Festival, and The Allentown Fair. Street-Eats will be a locally represented mobile food vendor, throughout the entire Lehigh Valley community.
Our initial intended target audience is students, faculty, staff, and visitors of DeSales University. Service will be quicker and easier than other dining options available on campus. Service provided is also different than what colleges in the surrounding area offer. All people on campus are considered intended customers because everyone needs food throughout the day, no matter what they are doing. We plan to be available for special events, including, but not limited to: sports events on campus. As our business expands, our target audience will also extend.
Our company is aware of the strict rules and policies regarding the existence of mobile food vendors on University’s property. We plan to do extensive research in order to follow all policies for the colleges and universities we wish to be present at. DeSales University has a contract with Sodexo, meaning all food/dining services is provided by that specific company. On the contrary, DeSales University has been known to allow private food contractors such as food trucks onto University property in the past. University policy regarding private food contractors is dealt with on a case to case bases. If the University feels that the company is providing something different from what is already offered then it is usually allowed. As previously mentioned, Street-Eats is intended for exactly what its name implies: the streets. Since the Universities and Colleges in the LVAIC Community do not possess any mobile food vendors we plan to use that as our proposed reasoning for existing on campus.
As far as products and supplies go, we have two tactics: buy in bulk and support local businesses. We plan to purchase a majority of our products and supplies in bulk from large well-known supplier, U.S Foods. The rest of our products and supplies we use will come from suppliers that are local and unique to the Lehigh Valley area. Since Street-Eats is meant to benefit the Lehigh Valley specifically, we are looking to also support local suppliers by using them for our supply needs. Fresh produce and meats, locally grown on Lehigh Valley farms will promote local businesses. All food preparation will take place within the food truck. Preparation will be held within the hours before the truck opens. Pricing will vary according to season, day, and time of day. We are planning to have our prices be more affordable than the other food options on campus.
Since we are an independent food truck business, we will of course be needing licenses and permission. We are hoping to purchase a fully stock food truck in order to go about obtaining the correct and necessary licenses. After we are a fully stocked food truck, we will be contacting Sodexo in order to gain permission for our presence on DeSales University’s campus. Since we will be operating at hours the DeSales University Dining Services does not offer, we are a necessity outside of Sodexo. We also plan to employ students of the Universities and Colleges we are supporting in order to both support our business and the young adult community of the Lehigh Valley area.
Street-Eats is a business DeSales, the LVAIC community, and local events are in need of. This is because of multiple reasons: convenience, variety and to break pre-existing repetition. Our food being sold will be fresh and produced locally in order to further support the Lehigh Valley.
