When you are younger you are told that everything will be alright, and to trust that. It is almost impossible to not worry about what is going to happen. Failure is a persistent thought even when we are thinking optimistically. Teenagers strive to please others, they want reassurance. The thought of failure can send students into a spiral of depression. An insightful message from Brian Harke, the Dean of Students at University of Southern California; “we are now raising a generation of students who have been conditioned by family, peers and society to believe that failing is not an option” (Harke). Attitudes have shifted leading us to be scared about our future. The taboo of failing came from the reassurance that you did not lose, everyone was awared no matter what effort they put towards it; this can be a destructive way of growing up. If culture would of strayed away from participation trophies and rewards for just showing up failure might not scare us. Personalities are prominent in Generation Z, standing for what we believe in We are more likely to express our feeling then to conform to our peers. Whether it is your sexulaity or the group of people you surround yourself by, we are comfortable. Gender roles have been broken by both men and women. They are entering careers that are typically labeled gender specific, “Two women made history by becoming the first female soldiers to complete their courses at the Army's exhausting Ranger School” (Scott). These two women defied odds and stereotypes that go along with the armed forces. Multiple people did not want women to attempt the course, but it only gave them more of a reason. They were strong and not afraid to go into something that was formerly for men. A riveting news article gathered information that half of the United Kingdom’s teen population does not identify as straight (Horton). This information can be shocking to many. Every generation sees sexuality as something which is slightly less set in stone. Within schools you will find LGBTQ clubs, they help people accept and feel comfortable with their identification. Our culture has grown up willing to accept one another allowing us to be comfortable with ourselves.
