motivation, learning and school achievement. I believe that a person’s mindset can change in different stages in life and counselors, teachers and families play an important role in advising and encouraging student’s success. The article of Rebecca Cox how a student’s attitude changes, when they have confidence in them and become successful. Students who are ready to take challenge, are not afraid to take challenge and study hard are successful in their studies and life.
To begin with, Students are fear of failing and this often relates to different mindsets of students. Through her research, Professor Dweck portrays that students believe that their brains, either see their intelligence as something that is fixed or somewhat that can cherish and change, shows a profound effect on students learning, motivation, and academics. She claims that “Many students believe that intelligence is fixed, that each person has a certain amount and that’s that”. These are fixed mindset students, who believe that their skills, talents and overall intelligence are fixed. Example of these students are those who are afraid to take challenge with either essay writing, asking or answering question in class. I personally was afraid to take any english, I avoided all general education classes which were English, I was afraid that I might not do good in English, as it would be hard for me to write essay after my high school which was 12 years. I was afraid of failure rather than taking on the challenge. Through readings and taking to other students and support from my family, I know have realized that I will not be able to find out either I will succeed to fail unless I will take the challenge. From Cox’s passage on “The student Fear Factor”, Jenn was also about to give up on college without even trying it out and later by support from her family when she kept her classes realized that after submitting her first assignment she felt that she has accomplished her achievement and she could write more.
Secondly, another mindset of students per Dweck are “Other students believe that intelligence I something that can be cultivated through effort and education”. Its simply means that not everyone has the same ability and are smart, but anyone can improve their abilities and become better. For instance, I at first thought I would not be able to able to succeed in Politic Course, as i was not aware of what was really going around. My first day in class made me feel I am not educated enough to take this class, it’s totally a new subject for me. In the end I felt one day or the other I must take this challenge, so I stayed focused in class took notes when the instructor explain and lectured in class I read my text and notes after class and worked hard on my study materials. I made myself better thought educating myself and working hard to become better in an area of study. Jean also made her self better at writing by writing more.
Moreover, Dereck also conducted another research on mindset on seventh graders and monitored their grades over two years and found out that different mindset students cared about different things at school.
She stated, “Those with a growth mindset were much more interested in learning than in just looking smart in school.” Students for instance who want to succeed in high school are always prepared in class, they always read their book ahead of time and are active listening in class. On the other hand, Dereck suggest that fixed mind students concentrate on the way they look and discard learning even the ones that are important to succeed. For instants kids with fixed mindset, know a day’s pay more attention to looking good, they pay attention on their branded clothes, shoes and makeup rather then concentrating on their studies. Per Dweck, student with these two-different mindsets also have different beliefs and efforts. She stated that growth mindset students knew that the harder one works the more their ability will grow, and they were aware that geniuses also had to work hard to become success. Students with fix mind choose different method to find success if they have a setback whereas fixed mind student feel they should study less the next or even consider
cheating.
In short, students who are acquainted with what is required and who are relatively confident and motivated from the start of their success as college students are the ones who attain success. Contrary to, students who are least acquainted with the standards of higher education, they feel lost and doubt their skills to fit in college. Fearful students are afraid to interact and ask questions in class or meet their professors after hours. These students are feared by failure rather than even taking the challenge. Student should reach out for help from families, counselors, other students, peer tutoring and other resources that are available to them on School Campus. Giving up easily should not be the be the resolution to overcome anxiety of the fear or not been able to succeed. This article relates a lot to me, I did have the fear that I will fail or not succeed in class. Doing good in first test gave me encouragement that I could get an A in class. Just looking at the course syllabus made me feel the class is hard and I would be better off getting a B or a C. I believe all student should have an education goal set and work towards achieving the ambition. They should ask the question what success means for them and what would be the result of being successful; a better Careers, lifestyle for yourself and your family.
