Introduction:

Human beings use five senses to develop and adjust to the best way of learning. By touching, seeing and hearing individuals can receive, process and keep information in different and unique ways from each other. This assignment discusses the three main ways of learning and their weaknesses and strengths, advantages and disadvantages compared to my own preferred learning style. Also it highlights the factors influencing them and distinguishes the significance of utilizing other learning strategies in order to learn better and faster.
What is a learning style?
A learning style can be characterized as “a certain specified pattern of behaviour and/or performance, according to which the individual takes in new information and develops new skills, and the process by which the individual retains new information or new skills.”
(Sarasin 1982)
There are several theories with different approaches on detailed categorizing of the learning styles. However, one of them defines the learning styles into three main types: visual, auditory and practical(kinaesthetic). Although classifying the learning styles into three primary groups is over simplified, in contrast to the other theories, mentioned above, it gives an easy practical approach and more clarity on understanding the different strategies of learning.

When one thinks back to their childhood, they may remember the career they wanted to pursue but at the time didn’t know how they would achieve their lifelong goal. As time goes on one will educate themselves, learning the necessary aspects and skills of their soon to be profession. During this time in one’s life they probably never gave much thought to what type of learning style they most familiarized with. What exactly does it mean to learn? By definition, “It is the act or process of gaining knowledge or skill by studying, practicing, being taught, or experiencing something” (Merriam-Webster.com, 2014). In order to evaluate one’s learning style there are assessments that can be taken and several models to compare to for analysis. One assessment in particular is called VARK: a guide to learning styles and it can be used to assess an individual’s learning style. “VARK, which is used for learning information, is a four modality acronym that stands for the Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic” (Fleming, 2014). This paper will review each aspect of the evaluated learning style compared to the preferred learning strategies of such an individual and determine if any changes are needed to make learning accessible and more efficient.…

As all students have a particular style of learning, this knowledge as a teacher enables the inclusion of a variety of tasks within their teaching style. Fleming (2005) stated that people can be grouped into four styles of learning: (Gravells, 2012), Visual, Aural, Read / Write and Kinaesthetic (VARK), with Honey and Mumford (1992) suggesting that learners are a…

Preferred learning style is a multimodal learning style which includes all of the above mentioned four learning modes. First of all, visual learning strategies include looking at pictures, postures, slides, diagrams, graphs, flow charts, and underlining and highlighting the key words during learning. After the teaching session is over, a visual learner should recall visual images used during learning and should practice turning visual images into words again to be able to write if needed for examination. Secondly, Aural learning strategies include attending classes and then discussing with others to hear from them, attending tutorials, discussing topics with educators, using a tape recorder to record lecture and then listening to it, and reading notes aloud to hear then again in order to remember material. Third, Read/write learning strategies include writing and rewriting key words and ideas, making a new list from diagrams and graphs, reading notes silently over and over, and practicing examination by writing answers. Lastly, kinesthetic learning strategies include using all the senses to learn material via demonstration. It includes experimenting in laboratories, field trips to learn new ideas, listening to lecture which includes real…

Learning styles are techniques to help enhance quality of learning. They are useful in problem solving and communication. They help process the information in different ways. There are multiple styles of learning that vary in numerous ways. Evaluating and exploring your own style will provide useful information to help enhance your quality of learning. Because we tend to use different learning styles in different situations, most of us have a mix of learning styles. One of the most popular guides to learning styles is a model developed in 1987 by Neil Fleming, a teacher from New Zealand. This guide is called VARK. The word VARK is an acronym. V, represents visual learning, like using pictures and graphs or charts. A, auditory learning, which consists of lectures, music, discussions. R, and K, for kinesthetic learning, which includes hands-on activities. This paper will address the diversity of learning styles, and how identifying and interpreting your own style may boost the quality of learning you receive.…

A learning style is the way in which a person processes new information. In the learning system there are three main types of learning which are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. People may learn best by being taught with the three learning methods, but others may not. Visual learners are people who learn by seeing. These people learn more where there are images, graphs, diagrams, and colors involved. Visual learners are learners that first have to see what they are expected to know. Auditory learners learn best by hearing. Lastly, there is the kinesthetic learners, also known as tactile learners, those learners learn best by the physical activity. In a class the students’ way of learning might not be the way the professor…

A learning style simply means how one learns and remembers information. Visual, auditory, or kinesthetic are the different learning styles. Learning styles can greatly go with personality, for instance a visual learner is usually neat and organized, while a kinesthetic learner is not so organized and impulsive. The visual learner thinks with pictures, likes to write things down, and can usually retain information easily. The auditory learner listens to information best and can usually verbalize and tell stories. Finally, the kinesthetic learner is a hands-on learner, likes to move around, and usually does not like to read directions. A teacher needs to recognize what type of learner each student is to understand how the student processes…

Learning styles theory originated in the 1970’s and is based around the idea that people have preferences about how they like to learn. Theorists believe that each individual has a particular learning style that is best suited to them and allows them to collect and process information successfully in order to learn. The principle idea is that these learning style differ from one individual to the next and theorists argue that school teachers should incorporate these learning styles into their lessons so that student is catered for and everyone can learn effectively. Many educationalists believe that differences in learning styles are responsible for some student difficulties, for example, if a student is taught…

Every course is a different learning style, using a variety of different styles that apply help retain the concept of the material. By using visual images and pictures help retain some difficult task in mathematics. When things do not require a lot of concentration, I use the aural method, allowing music to guide me in the communication process. The Aural method usually happens late night after a difficult day. First step of f learning is self-assessment (Federwisch, 2010). It is better to understand ourselves as a leaner and evaluate the way to learn. Its main benefit is to get you to think about yourself, to consider learning alternatives; not to rigidly classify you ("Learning style inventory," ). The definition of learning style is simply the way in which a learner prefers to learn. That does not mean that they can’t learn other ways. It just means they have a tendency to like to learn in a certain way” (Federwisch, 2010). With the help of VARK questionnaire, we can assess a student's learning style (Fleming, 2012). As a strong aural (hearing) learner, the student does follow some aural methods of learning and can apply some methods of following in order to improve the learning ability (Fleming, 2012). It does not matter what is the preferred learning style is, a nurse always has to continually challenge themselves (Federwisch, 2010).…

Learning styles determine how effective a student will be receptive to instructions from the teacher or content from educative material. Ideally, scientists have proposed three main types of learning styles common among students: auditory, visual, and tactile. Consequently, a student can either possess only one style of learning or have a combination of any of the three learning styles. For instance, many psychological and human behavior experts presume that students who prefer charts, graphs, and diagrams over textual material are visual learners. This paper is going to present findings on the kinds of learning styles I predominantly possess. These learning styles are determined by scientifically approved tests, which serve as inventories where students can obtain information about learning behaviors. Furthermore, the paper will act as a critique of the findings about my learning styles as…
