Evolution of Health Care information Systems The Veterans Administration (VA) was established in 1930 by President Hoover to help consolidate all parties involved in providing benefits to veterans (Department of Veterans Affairs, 2011). Over the years the VA has grown from 54 hospitals in 1930 to over 153 medical centers , 909 community based clinics., 135 nursing homes, 47 rehabilitation programs, 232 Veteran Centers, and 108 home-care programs (Department of Veterans Affair, 2011). By creating this department the President acknowledged the need for oversight as well as improvements in the system to ensure our Veterans received the care and benefits they deserved. Another event that proved to be influential in the restructuring of the Veterans Administration was the appointment of Secretary Shinseki a retired General to lead a massive transformation of the VA system (Department of Veterans Affair, 2013). Even in the 1930 's when the VA was just beginning, the foundation was being laid for the advances in technology that were in line with the goal of improving the delivery care to throughout the VA system. The advances made over the last twenty years have impacted the way patients are treated and the way healthcare is delivered throughout the VA system. Because of rising cost, and the complexity of the patients the evolution in technology has been crucial to the development of other avenue to treat patients, provide disease management, and provide better access to care. These advancements have also led to more efficient and cost effective care to the Veteran population. In the future the technology will evolve and hopefully will continue on the path that was set by the Veterans Administration by continuing to improve on the delivery of care system, and using research to develop evidence based practices that will continue to provide patient centered care to the Veteran
