Summary Of Can You Heal From Loss
Can You Heal From Loss?
The story was based on a real event in Columbia. The main character is Rolf Carle. The story starts on the first line with, "They discovered the girl's head protruding from the pit of mud, the eyes were wide open and was calling in low tones," (Allende, 922) this sets the mood for understanding the stories content. Also, the identification of this girl establishes the tone of love lost for over thirty years. Rolfs’ finding of Azucena makes him close the gap of the experiences and feelings he was having so that he could confront them. Azucena is among thousands of victims of this volcanic eruption that had occurred. The volcano had killed the entire village. They were the few survivors who had remained. "The mud was like quicksand on her, any person who tried to save her would sink." (Allende, 923) They attempted to save her by throwing a rope around her. When she tried to raise her hand to pull the rope, she sunk further into the mud.

She would tell Rolf about her life, school and also about her family. Rolf also told her about his job as a reporter, his adventures, and life travels. Even though she sometimes dozed off, she would still talk in darkness just to assure Rolf that she was there and also to overcome the fear that she might be dead.
On the following morning, she was still in the tire but shivering. Being immobile and all the tension had substantially made her weak. Even though going through all this, she was still very conscious and could talk on the microphone that was given to her by Rolf. There was a priest who was passing by; the priest opted to pray for her and bless her. He also gives Azucena a medal of a virgin. Rolf continued giving her courage to continue to brace the situation. He says to her, don't be afraid, keep your strength and also be calm, everything will be okay, and I will get you out of here. (Allende,

From a young age, Eva dives into her own imagination to escape the harshness of her life; she becomes lost in “never-ending voyages” of a sea landscape captured in a painting in Elvira’s home. Likewise with Ort, he escapes through his imaginative mind when he is experiencing certain times of stress in his life. Winton ends almost every chapter with a comment on the moon, the clouds or that eye, the sky, almost as if Ort was summarising the events of that particular chapter using the sky, something that he feels as a protective force, giving him comfort. While Eva doesn’t question the events of her life, she understands the world and its darkness; she uses her uncanny gift of storytelling to create happier endings for herself and others, like re-creating Rolf’s past to help him overcome the sadness of his family history, giving rise to her sense of optimism in the world. Contrasting with Ort, he attempts to understand the world and how he fits in with it all through…

Suffering and loss is a regular situation in the human life cycle, it is vital to learn how to deal with it so that it doesn’t affect the rest of our lives negatively. In Scott Russell Sanders’s Ten Reasons Why We’ll Always Need a Good Story he explains that one of the reasons is to help us deal and become aware of suffering, loss, and death. During our youth we often don’t consider the end of the life cycle. However, in life we will always encounter grieving from a loved one’s death. The first time we experience some sort of grieving it may be very hard to handle and may cause depression. Stories help us prepare for moments of suffering, loss, and death with fictional experiences which show us how to deal with these unfortunate events. In the three short stories we read at least one character in each story is forced to deal with suffering, loss, or death. In the short story Bluffing by Gail Helgason, Liam has an unfortunate accident and experiences physical pain as well as the emotional pain of his deteriorating relationship with Gabriella. In Two Words by Isabel Allende, Belisa Crepusculario is devastated by the death of her entire family due to their impoverished lifestyle and the love between her and the Colonel causes them to miss each other. In The Indisputable Weight of the Ocean by Darryl Berger, Edmund deals with not being able to see his father and deals with the suffering of moving to a suburban area.…
