I have experienced winters with and without snow. I have experienced both diverse, and homogeneous worlds. I have friends from boarding schools, as well as, friends from schools in urban neighborhoods. And I love it.…
At the beginning of the course I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was my first year in college and my first English class of the year. In High school, English classes worshiped the 5 paragraph essay format, and this format spontaneously disappeared in English 101. Instead of the 5 paragraph format, we were introduced to writing about the text instead of the topic. Our papers weren’t structured as 5 paragraphs as much as length in pages. The texts we were introduced to were focused on rhetorical analysis. Rhetorical analysis is an essay that breaks down a work into pieces and explains how these pieces fit together to give off a certain effect, such as persuasion. The papers we were doing were are interpretative but based on rhetorical analysis.…
•Errors in grammar, mechanics, and punctuation are obvious and distract the reader but do not interfere with meaning, and the essay is short.…
In “A Stranger in Strange Lands” McCarthy relates the classes Dave attended to a foreign country with a language that had to be learned in order to succeed. Dave struggled in his poetry class because he failed to learn the “foreign” language of the class. In this academic discourse, Dave had to learn to analyze and write essays that will, “make [him] say something quite specific about the meaning of a poem (your thesis) and demonstrate how far [he has] progressed in recognizing and dealing with the devices a poet uses to expresses his insights” (242). Because this was unlike what he had to do in his Freshmen Composition or Biology class, this approach was foreign to him. He was use to summarizing and proving his textual coherence but now he was more focused on new ways of thinking and writing for that class. His grades in the poetry class never improved. The social aspects as well as his coherence influenced his writing. Dave had a connection to the writing his both of his other classes but not to poetry. He thought that none of the poetry related except for the similar literary devices. He also felt that he was an outsider on the discipline while his instructor wasn’t. He would spend hours writing the essay to fulfill the required Manner and Quality just to have his errors pointed out without any explanation as to why they were wrong. Dave felt that, “In Poetry, more or less each poem is different, so it’s not taught to you. You just have to figure it out from that poem itself and hope Dr. Forson likes it” (251). This hindered Dave’s chance of succeeding in the class. Because he saw that his writing was failing he could’ve asked to meet with the professor privately to discuss what he was doing wrong. The professor also could’ve had more guideline lectures and helped the students by pointing out some details in the poem that would’ve benefited their writing.…
The prosperity and wealth of nations are closely linked with economic growth. Accelerating the development of economic growth in a sustained way is therefore one of the most important issues in economics. Economists have long used a variety of approaches to shed light on why some countries experience faster growth than others. In the vast amount of literature on the subject there are three schools that stand out in particular. First, there is a group of scholars that places geographical factors such as climate, transport cost and natural resources as the main explanatory factors. Recent writings by Jared Diamond and Jeffery Sachs are important contributions in this paradigm (Diamond, 1997; Sachs, 2001). Second, there is a faction that emphasizes international trade as a key to economic growth. Important contributions to this market-integration view have been presented in the works of Frankel & Romer (1999) and Dollar & Kraay (2004). Finally, there is a third group focusing on the explanatory power that institutions veil in this matter. This paper will follow in this tradition, as there seems to bee an increasingly pervasive concurrence among economists studying the phenomena that the development and quality of the institutional environment holds the key to prevailing patterns of sustained growth and prosperity around the world. Rich countries are those with sustained rule of law and property rights, effective policies towards private enterprises and competition, the political system is stabile and effective, companies enjoys easy access to financing and superior tax regimes and there is a well functioning…
I've only done one exceptional thing in my entire life. It was two months ago but I feel like an eternity passed since that day. I always thought about myself as a person who's impossible to get provoked. I based that opinion on my attitude towards Beca Baker, a girl who was trying to get on my nerves since the first day of high school. She was talking shit about me, pranking me - or at least trying to, she was way too stupid to pull of a successful prank - and making sure other people hated me as much as she did. Of course I could fight her - tell her to fuck off or spread some gross gossip about her but I felt like it would be too much effort. She wasn't as influential as she thought she was so I still had a few friends and was liked at school. I didn't care about Beca.…
My life would have been completely different had my parents chosen to go back to China in 2001. At first, my dad came here alone for a job offer, and my mom and I came to visit him a year later. However, our family’s intended short visit soon became a permanent residence. They chose to stay so that I could have a better education and ultimately, a better life. But in order to attain what they initially envisioned when making that life-changing decision, they have had to endure numerous hardships and obstacles.…
“WHOA WHOA WHOA THIS IS BALONEY MAN!” that is something I say whenever I am frustrated. People have always told me sometimes the best way to learn something is through failure. People value things they have accomplished differently. Often the people whom are naturally adept at things do not realize how much of a struggle it can be for others. Many times when people have told me that if you are going to fall, fall forward. Do not let your insecurities, doubts, and pride get in the way of improving yourself. In brief, there can always be a way to improve yourself.…

A time when someone shared a special accomplishment or achievement with me was last year during track season. My team, my coaches, and I shared the accomplishment of being North Tier League (NTL) champions. Also, because we were North Tier League champions, we were recognized in the school yearbook and received an NTL patch for our varsity jackets.…
The first time in my life that I ever experienced true anger and fear was in the sixth grade. A little before Thanksgiving Break, I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, a type of skin cancer, in my lower back. I had a mole there that was removed earlier that year, and the test results on it had come back positive. I did not find out until later, but when my mom sat me down across from her to talk, I knew something was wrong. It was then that she told me what was going on, and I broke down in tears. I had never experienced fear such as I did then.…

It was a perfectly normal Saturday night, until I sat on the couch. I expected to enjoy a funny movie with my dad, but instead I got a trip to the hospital. I sat on the couch, and then I felt a sting in my elbow. At first, it felt like I got a shot at the doctor, but it slowly got worse, and felt more like a knife slicing into my elbow. I winced and sprung up from the couch. I squinted and my eyes scanned the spot where I just sat down. Aha, I thought. There was a small piece of plastic, and it looked like it broke off from a container.…
Throughout the past year I have endured several life changing occurances. One of my family members troubled through the treturous stages of cancer and unfortunately has passed at this time. If I have taken anything away from this, it is that family is the most important resource in a persons life. Without those people who tell you that you can, regardless of the circumstances, becoming succesful could be very challenging. After clearing my head, I was able to start thinking of a career choice that would make me enjoy going to work. I encountered an opening at a local CVS/Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician and applied. After being hired, I immediately fell in love with the surroundings, the people, the patient interaction, and the knowledge…
Burger King or McDonalds? In the United States, these two companies equally compete for consumers. Americans usually favor one company over the other or just choose to eat at whichever is more convenient to them. For the American people, Burger King is as common of a household name as McDonalds. However, in Japan, the Burger King brand is one that is not very well known. Burger King has been trying to tap into the Japanese market for some time now. McDonalds, KFC, and Pizza Hut are the leading fast food market chains as of today, but Burger King is trying to make it into this region of the world. With U.S. markets saturated, and the mad cow disease scare slowing sales of Burger King in Europe, it is so important for Burger King to saturate another market, Japan. Much research has been done to think of new and effective ways to penetrate the Japanese market through marketing. Our group of researchers have put together an in depth report on the issues within the marketing of Burger King in Japan. They have discovered the main cause for this need in marketing and what needs to be done to solve Burger King’s marketing issues.…
