Fear often becomes our worst enemy when it makes you become irrational and stops you from thinking clearly. First of all, fear can make us become overly cautious, to the point where it causes harm. In Nadine Gordimer’s novel “Once Upon a Time” a family builds a barbed wire wall because they are so afraid of the robberies and the boy decides to explore the fence and dies from being shredded by the wire “(the boy) dragged a ladder to the wall, the shining coiled tunnel...with the first fixing of its razor-teeth in his knees and hands and head he… struggled deeper into its tangle.” (Gordimer, 6 ). The family built the fence to protect themselves but it only ended up hurting them. The family’s fear ended up destroying them. Throughout my life,…

The sound of beeping awakens you. With difficulty and trouble, you force yourself out of bed, your brain still not yet conscious. You get your uniform and proceed to head to the bathroom to get ready for school. Minutes pass by quickly and you are walking to school, lost in deep thought. For some time now, you have not yet listened to the world around you. As you gently shift your focus towards the world before you, your ears process the sound of anger at its highest level. You cannot believe what you hear. Vexation fills the air and you are now in an ever so dangerous environment. As you turn the corner, the sounds of the shouting get louder and louder. You can now hear loud running. Your eyeballs move to look around and then you see it…

On March 4, 1933, President Roosevelt said to the the American people, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” This quote means that if you are overcome by fear, it will make the situation you’re in harder. When I read this, I say that I agree with our former president. When looking at the stories and article, “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street,” “Three Skeleton Key,” and “Stepping it Up,” they show us that fear is our worst enemy when you are overcome by it.…

This paper will be about how fear will make you make choices based on your belief. In this country, we have the opportunity to make choices on our own because not everyone have the same belief, so therefore we do not have fear. In the stories that we read, we can see that they didn't have that opportunity because they had to follow certain beliefs. If they committed some crime they would be punished for their actions. Fear can influence decisions, beliefs, and change a person's thought whether if it's what they want for themselves or for the society.…

Have you ever wondered why you seem so tired day after day? Maybe it has something to do with the time that you wake up to get ready for school. It turns out that school start times are way too early for us to focus and be alert, and it could have some major consequences. Theodore Roosevelt once said, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” What is fear? Fear can be a noun or a verb. In the noun form, it is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. In the verb form, it is to be afraid of someone or something that is dangerous, painful, or threatening. If one person looks into fear, then that person becomes feared. But imagine a whole society or community looking into fear. The fear not only gets larger as it spreads, but it also gets more fearful than it already is. The power of fear can be displayed in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and in Ronald Oakley’s “The Great Fear”. As fear moves on from one mind to the next, it leaves the victim panicked and paranoid about everything that revolves around him or her. This “symptom” is known as hysteria. In The Crucible, the hysteria greatly affected the people of Salem. As well as “The Great Fear”, the whole world was in chaos and turmoil due to mass hysteria. The consequences that followed were innocent people became accused and were persecuted (affected victims), self control and limits to go out of hand (people behaved hysterically), unjustified trials and judgments or accusations to be declared (pressures), and superiors to become defied (misuse of power).…

Beep! Beep! Beep! My alarm clock screams, yet again, urging me to rise up from bed and get ready for school. Groggily, I lift my head toward the clock above me. Reaching out, I whack the snooze button. I have fifteen more minutes until the school bus comes. As I possess the deadly sin of sloth, I let myself drop to the bed, back into the safety and warmth of my cover, a typical decision for a typical day.…

When your alarm rings, get up right away without thinking about it: If you lay in bed, even for a few minutes, the tendency to drift back to sleep increases. If you’re having trouble with this, place your alarm clock somewhere away from your bed. Unless you love hearing the incessant, monotonous sound coming from your alarm, you will have no choice but to physically get out of bed to turn it off.…
