I ask the parents if they need any special requirements, accommodations, or modifications to better service their children. Before the child enters the classroom, I make sure they know they are included. I post a welcome sign for each new child and their cubby is already labeled so they know where to store their belongings. Once the child has entered the classroom, I take another child and introduce them and then we all take a tour of the classroom. Twice per year there are conference times set up for the parents to meet with teachers regarding to the progress of their child and what we will be working on for the remainder of the year. The parents are encouraged to attend one or both of these. If the parents have questions or concerns, they are encouraged to ask at anytime, whether it is daily or at the time of the conferences. As professionals we must reach all parents and caregivers and provide them opportunities for education for not just their children, for the parents and caregivers as well. Some children had been doing very well, and so the teacher had many positive points to explain to happy parents, but, some children had not managed to achieve the targets set, or had a lower than acceptable rate of attendance. This required very effective communication as the parents had to know that there were issues that needed addressing, how the issues needed to be addressed and that if there were any relevant underlying problems or concerns that they knew about, the parents could, with confidence, tell the teacher, so that the concerns could be taken into account and helpful advice or referrals to other professional bodies could be arranged if necessary.…

As a part of this course, I was asked to interview a special education administrator based on the concepts covered in the class. The administrator I chose is Anne Stokowski, my current principal. Anne is someone who I’ve known for the past three years. She has been an integral part in my growth as a school leader. She has provided me several opportunities to lead various committees in the school and encouraged me to pursue my Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. I had the pleasure of visiting Mrs. McCotter’s Autistic classroom. I arrived at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, November 27th. Her classroom is at Ealy Elementary in West Bloomfield, which has a wonderful special education program. I chose to observe in an autistic classroom because it is something I had never experienced before until now. The classroom was incredibly nice and everyone was so welcoming! The classroom is arranged with a variety of stations. There is the play station, the movement station, their independent work stations, and a table and chairs. There were three paraprofessionals along with Mrs. McCotter working with the students. There are six students in the classroom, however only five were present that day. The ages range from 4 - 5. There are five boys and one girl in the classroom. Three of those students can work independently, while three of the students need one-on-one work. Five students were Caucasian and one was Hispanic. Three of the students are cognitively impaired, but I was told that autism is primary for them.…
It has been twenty-two years since my failure, and I have matured and learned how to accept responsibilities and not to take great and generous opportunities, like the Federal Student Aid and many others, for granted. I have since been experiencing very difficult challenges in life, especially job security. Just recently, I was fortunate enough to convince the Pohnpei Community Health Center’s board of directors that I would implement and support an Electronic Health Record System to streamline the center’s workflows and to utilize a safe and secure health data repository in order to efficiently and securely cater to the community.
