Surprise Birthday Party
Pancakes, Hash Browns, and Bacon

It was a foggy, gloomy morning in the month of November. It was November 19, the best day ever, MY BIRTHDAY! I was turning ten. That morning at about 6:30am I jumped out of my bed with much excitement. It was a school day. I picked out my cleanest uniform I had in my closet and the cleanest shoes I had in my shoe box. I jumped in the shower and sang the whole time, until it was time to get out. It was time to get dressed and do my hair. As I was slipping on my white fluorescent polo shirt my mom quickly walked in and said “good-morning” and quickly walked out of my room. I wondered “did she forget it was my birthday”. However, I made my way to the kitchen to eat a nice healthy breakfast. I sat in front of a plate with pancakes, hash browns, scrambled eggs and bacon! As I was eating my breakfast, my little sister sat in the chair across from me, once again no had wished me a Happy Birthday. The day wasn’t over yet, as a matter of fact it had just begun. It was time go to school. As my mom, sister and I were making our way over there no one said a word. It was as if a rat had eaten our tongues. Once we arrived to school I was excited to see my friends because I knew they hadn’t forgotten my birthday. I was the one of the first ones to get to school early, so I began to form a line on the blacktop over our class room number. As my classmates began to arrive all they had told me was “hi good morning”. I was being to get a little sad. Everyone had forgotten it was MY BIRTHDAY! The day continued and it was time for recess. I didn’t want to go out so I stayed in inside. My teacher asked me what was wrong, but I didn’t want to talk to anyone. She asked me once more and I told her that nobody here at school or at my house had wished me a happy birthday. She laughed and said “you are up for a big surprise”. I didn’t know exactly what she meant but I helped

I woke up on the ground with my ankle sore and my head throbbing. Then I realized that it was my seventh birthday, I was so excited! It was an amazing feeling when I remembered that I was going to have a party at the park! The only thing I didn’t know was that I was going to climb a ladder that day. I was also going to get a little wet. Then we finally set up the party and everyone arrived and then we had cake and started playing tag.…

It was Tuesday, March first, 2011, my mother woke me up so I can start getting ready for school. I rose with eager anticipation, just four more days until my thirteenth birthday and I just couldn’t wait. I brushed my teeth and hurried down to eat the complimentary breakfast offered to us by the hotel we were staying at. You see we had been staying at a hotel for the past five months because the home we had been renting was foreclosed on so the utility companies turned off the power and the electricity. We had to get down at just the right time so that there was a small crowd but a lot of food so that we can take food back to the room to save for dinner. After breakfast, we…

“Wake up!” my mom gave me a little shove as I took the covers off my face and looked at the clock, it was 7:20. I hopped off the bed and skipped to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I was so excited; this whole week was FCAT week at school and today was the math portion of the test. Last year, 3rd grade, I got a 3 on it while on the reading part I had gotten a 5. This year, I was determined to get a 4, no matter how difficult the test may be. I put my long, wavy brown hair in a ponytail and, being the girly girl that I am, decorated it with a pink bow my aunt had given me for Christmas. With a big smile on my face I went to my mom’s room to see if she was ready so we could be on our way, I saw her sitting down looking at her nails, “mommy, we’re going to be late” she looked up at me and it looked like she had been crying, she faked a smiled, got her bag and out the door we went.…

When I got to the kitchen a strong scent of grits, eggs, and sausage filled the air with a wonderful and delightful smell. As I sat down to begin eating my food, my mother turned and looked at me to ask me how my morning was going so far. I told her I was having a fantastic morning. I had helped my mom get dressed because she asked me what dress she should wear to my graduation. I told her to wear her long black and white striped dress with some heels.…

I was so excited. Yes, I’ve been to a library but those were old used dusty books, here at the book store everything was new and shiny. My aunt sat in the wooden alligator chair and let me roam around the kids section for an hour picking out books that interested me. After narrowing it down, I was left with The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein and Today I Feel Silly by Jamie Lee Curtis. We cashed out and headed to the Starbucks café and bought hot chocolate. Right as my aunt and I got to the big carpeted seat I spilt my hot chocolate, I’ve always been a clumsy person. But today was a special day, I didn’t get yelled at, she just picked up the cup and went to get me a new one. Right before leaving I asked if we could come back, Auntie Laurie told me we could come back whenever I wanted. As we walked out the door, I was planning for another visit the next…

As I was getting dropped off and hearing my mom telling me bye I started to cry. Being really close to my mom I didn't want her to leave me there all alone. So we walked in together and she told me that I was going to be all right. My mom and my new teacher, Mrs. Fossum were having a hard time getting me to stay there. After they saw that I wouldn't stay, my mom had to stay there with me thru out that whole day. As the first day went on I was making a bunch of friends with my new classmates. When the second day came I wanted my mom to stay at school but I realized that she had to go to work. After she had left I saw a table that had some crayons and some paper on it, so I ventured over to it and stood by the seat watching to see if anyone was going to stop me from drawing. No one came so I took a seat, a piece of paper, and of course a blue coloring pencil just like the one I had at home and started to draw. When the other children saw that I was already hard at work with my drawing, which somewhat looked like a cow, they came and sat down with me. Even the child that didn’t want to leave his father noticed me and…

It was a warm sunny day, like the ones you would expect in a summer camp; laughter was the melody that filled the air. Everybody was cheerful and enthusiastic, well everybody except one of our counselors. He was very worried, because his sister had been extremely sick, and nobody had been able to heal her. Everybody in my group had told him how sorry we felt for her, but really nobody connected with his situation, so we were not thinking about it. Instead we were immerging our souls into the contentment that was surrounding us. That day while we were acting, everybody was relaxed, focused and happy on what we were doing. We were living in our own little summer bubble. We decided to take a small break, in between the laughs I remember a friend saying “Isn’t it surprisingly amazing how beautiful life can be?”. That was the last sentence said before a cell phone rang and changed the course of the day.…

I awoke to the slamming of the front door, remembering that it was Sunday, my dad's favorite day of the year, the first day of hunting season. I jump out of bed and stumble down the stairs waking everybody else in the house up. Looking out the window I see my dad pull away in his big red pickup truck with the sleeve of his orange hunting jacket hanging out the window. Hoping he brings home dinner, I start to make myself breakfast, I make my dad's favorite; eggs with crispy bacon. As I'm cooking breakfast I think to myself, I wished I had gotten up earlier to say bye to him, or even go out with him. It was a beautiful day to go out hunting and I had never missed the first day of the season before. It was like a tradition he and I had, we would always go out and hunt together. My dad and I had a relationship that not many fathers and daughters had; we really enjoyed spending time together doing things outside that not many people like to do. Losing my train of thought, I look down at the pan of charred eggs and sigh. Nothing went like planned today, I thought.…

We woke up that morning to breakfast that was prepared by her mother Mrs. Gross. We didn’t necessarily have anything planned for the day, just to play games and watch TV. Kennedi and her family were far more fortunate than my family was. Not saying that my family was poor, but Kennedi had everything as a child, the newest phone, or latest shoes that were out, all the way to having a flat screen TV. She lived in Desoto, Texas which isn’t a bad place to live, and has nice homes. However, we spent the first half of the day inside looking and movies and playing simple board games. It was too the point where we got so bored, we went outside looking for other kids to play with.…
