This is largely due to the significant investments it has made in research and development for the transformative technology in its cars. Tesla is also investing heavily for the construction of its factory in California, which has already begun producing battery packs and will likely manufacture lithium cell batteries by year’s end. Because of these large cash outlays, Tesla has reported negative free cash flows and earnings for nearly every year since its IPO (Annual Report 2017). Recently, by introducing the new Model 3, Tesla has been forced to raise more debt and sell more shares. It has also argued that such a dramatic increase in production would leave the company facing large cash requirements through 2018, especially if sales do not match Tesla's expectations (Forbes Aug 2017).
High costs of vehicles – Tesla vehicles are more expensive than the ordinary vehicles and in this regard they rank among the premium category vehicles. Apart from its Model 3, Model S and Model X are costly and therefore not affordable for the middle class consumers. Even the Model 3 is somewhat high priced for the middle class consumers in the developing countries. The high cost of Tesla vehicles is an important weakness that has kept Tesla’s sales from growing fast.
