Taking Care of Yourself
In this paper I chose to write about Healthy vs. Happy. I will talk about the relevance of being happy and healthy from my perspective. Taking great care of my body has always been important to me. With that being said not only do I like to take care of my body, but also it is also exciting as well as motivating for me to see the great changes that one can make happen with food, diet and exercise.

Almost 20 years ago I took an interest in vitamins, herbs and healing the body. My first book and guide down the path to a healthier lifestyle was Prescription for Nutritional Healing. I had a membership card to Vitamin World and I was on a journey to learning about the body, healing, how to and when to do a detox and so much more. I loved this book so much and what I was learning in it that I began to purchase it for friends and family members as a gift.

As a child I was diagnosed with adrenal disease. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is disease that affected your hormones, energy, stress and so forth. I learned many years down the line that you had to get proper rest of 8 hours plus, eat a healthy diet, find ways to relax your mind and body and stay out of stressful situations. I also understood that exercise was a priority for maintaining overall health and releasing stress. I started taking yoga classes for relaxation of my mind and body as well as including cardio 3-4 days per week in my exercise regimen. In 2009 my adrenal glands began to over work and I became fatigued and sick for 6 months or so. It became more of an urgency for me to take even better care of my body and mind.
After having such a wake up call of treating my body and myself better I set out on a different course of learning more. I enrolled in a 6-month yoga certification class to learn the benefits of yoga on the body and mind. I began to use yoga daily as way to set my tone and intention for the day. This was my time for meditation, reading and relaxation prior to leaving the house. One

I immediately started to feel the effects my stress levels were causing my body. I suffered from a constant headache that would rarely go away with pain killers. I did not sleep well, and I found I was always anxious and depressed. My mom and sisters urged me to see a doctor and get on an antidepressant to help me deal with the events going on in my life. I ended up seeing a doctor and talked to her about my problems. Medication was the only solution she had to offer me. I was reluctant on starting on a “happy pill” but I decided it was worth a shot. I didn’t like the way I felt on the medication. I did not feel like my old self, I felt numb to emotions. I decided to stop taking the pills and start on a mediation routine every night. I started to learn about mindfulness and living in the present, not dwelling on the past and future. It did not take long before I started to see a real change in my life. As I kept going forward, I soon became happy again. I now feel so strongly about the benefits of mediation and mindfulness. I wish so badly that more traditional doctors would practice complementary medicine because I know personally the positive effects it could make for…

When many think about self-care, the first thing that comes to mind is to pamper one’s self such as a facial, manicure, pedicure, and or a massage. To pamper one’s self is definitely a way an individual can choose to take care of one’s self. According to the free dictionary self-care is (2015), “The care of oneself without medical, professional, or other assistance or oversight.” Many individuals working in the field of human services are caught up in work and sometimes forget to use self-care strategies. “Sometimes the last person social workers nurture is themselves” (Jackson, 2014, para.1). With professionals in the human services field forgetting to use self-care strategies, many times they reach the point of burnout. High success rates with clients are less likely to happen with professionals who have reached the point of burnout. There are many self-care techniques that can be used, but it depends on the individual and his or her preferences.
