Tanisha Abraham: A Short Story
Some days, she feels like she’s about to tip over It’s not everyday that a homeschooled girl who’s supposed to be in fifth grade is thrown into high school.
Tanisha Abraham, a 10 year old girl barely over 4 feet is the youngest and quite possibly the smallest sophomore to attend high school. Not only is she attending a more mature school, but she’s also taking advanced core classes, theater arts and photography. Along with that, she’s to be featured on a PBS of “Little Geniuses” that will air Friday, May 1.
“Learning has always come easy to me,” sophomore Tanisha Abraham said
And with a mom who has a physics and English literature doctorate, Tanisha could’ve learned everything she needed to know and more from her mother.
However, the same teacher for eight hours a day for six years can get a little boring.

Her homeschooling didn’t give her any social interactions besides her mom and the occasional ‘homeschool field trips.’
“We wanted Tanisha to move to a school setting to help prepare her for college. She is dying to go to Harvard, and that’s a pretty big school. I didn’t want her to transition from a school of no one to a school of thousands,” Tanisha’s mom, Claretta Abraham said.
Despite being a genius, the young sophomore has been accepted and treated normally in her school.
“Tanisha is in my theater class,” sophomore Silvia Kealing said. “ We became instant friends because we both love Katy Perry and ‘The Vampire Diaries.’ It’s a little weird that she’s only 10. I was shocked when she told me. I just thought she was tiny.”
Against Claretta’s qualms and worries of bullying, her daughter has made lots of friends and adores the teachers as well as the school.
“Everyone has a talent,” Tanisha said. “I’m just smart - no big deal. That’s what I have liked best about the school. Everyone has treated me like a normal kid, not some weird

“Okay, that’s fair,” I say giggling. Alana and I stay in the cafeteria for about fifteen minutes. We make jokes, talk about how my role model is Serena Williams and her role model is her father, and we both wonder what’s going to happen when we get back to school. No one caught us that night, because I don’t think any adults would think any ten-year-old girl would be awake at 3 a.m. That night, Alana and I became partners in crime, until we faded away in junior…

Growing up, Jason was always the smartest kid in class. He was beating games at age five and had an eloquent vocabulary. At a young age my parents could see that he was a genius; my mom always joked how it was all the Chinese food she ate while she was pregnant with him. After finishing seventh grade, he attended SMU's talented and gifted program, also known as TAG.
